Dhoni And Bowlers Sensational Effort Power CSK To Table-Topping Win

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a smashing eight-run victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the second game of the Super Sunday double-header at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. CSK skipper MS Dhoni displayed a spectacular performance with the bat to power his team towards a pretty challenging first innings total, after which the CSK bowlers  delivered an amazing combined effort to rattle the RR top order. Towards the end of the chase, the pair of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer showed an entertaining fight to somehow take the game deep, but then Dwayne Bravo held his nerves in the final over to help his team pick up an emphatic victory. With a remarkable hat-trick of wins, CSK have now claimed the top spot on the points table of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 edition.

Dhoni’s powerful knock propel CSK to 175

RR skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to field first because he thought that the dew factor will come into play in the second innings and thus, the wicket will get better for chasing. CSK got off to a disappointing start, losing three quick wickets in the first six overs of the powerplay. The fast bowling duo of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer bowled really well to rattle the CSK top-order. However, after the early opening jitters, CSK skipper MS Dhoni joined hands with Suresh Raina to bail their out of the troublesome situation with an excellent partnership of 61 runs. Raina played a brief innings of 36 runs, before falling victim to Jaydev Unadkat in the 14th over.

Even after Raina’s wicket, Dhoni kept striking the ball at a sensational pace, racking up an excellent half-century off 39 balls. Towards the end of the innings, initially it looked like CSK will fall short of a fighting total, but then, Dhoni took the matter into his control, blasting Unadkat for a total of 28 runs in the 20th over which included four gigantic sixes. The CSK skipper composed a splendid unbeaten knock of 75 runs off just 46 balls which consisted of 4 fours and 4 sixes, to guide his team towards an imposing first innings total of 175 runs. Archer was the pick of the RR bowlers, claiming two crucial wickets at an impressive economy.

CSK survive Stokes-Archer scare

CSK new ball bowler Deepak Chahar got his team off to great start, dismissing the in-form duo comprising of RR skipper Ajinkya Rahane and last match’s centurion Sanju Samson pretty early in the run-chase. Right-arm fast bowler Shardul Thakur then bowled a beautiful delivery to pick up the prized scalp of Jos Buttler and in turn left the visitors reeling at 14 for 3. After that collapse, the pair of  Steve Smith and Rahul Tripathi stitched a fine stand of 61 runs to resurrect the RR innings. CSK leg-spinner Imran Tahir then bowled an exceptional spell to send back both Tripathi and Smith back into the hut.

At the halfway mark in the chase, RR were looking in a terrible position and they seemed to be down and out of this game. But then came a massive turning point when suddenly the duo of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer out of nowhere started taking the CSK bowlers for some incredible cleaners. The pair compiled a quick-fire partnership of 44 runs to somehow keep their team alive and kicking in the nervous chase. However, CSK all-rounder Dwayne Bravo then bowled brilliantly well in the final over, defending a stiff total of 12 runs and picking up the prized scalp of the dangerous looking Stokes and in turn propelled his team to a remarkable win. The CSK bowlers, Tahir, Chahar, Thakur and Bravo bowled fabulously to scalp two wickets each.
