After winning the match against the three time IPL title winners, Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab opening batsman KL Rahul talked about the ‘Universal Boss’ Chris Gayle. He said that the Windies batsman should be allowed to keep the strike when he is playing the best version of the game. The team won against Mumbai Indians in their home ground after chasing a target of 177 runs on Saturday. KXIP started slow with the match, as they managed to score just 27 runs at the end of the powerplay. But after that, Gayle managed to take the charge after hitting big shots wherever he could whereas KL Rahul was struggling to stay on the crease.
I didn’t walk into this game with a lot of runs or time in the, middle says Rahul
Rahul took defense of his slow rate but it was Gayle that made the team emerge victorious after registering an eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Mohali on March 30. Gayle after scoring 40 runs for 24 balls got dismissed in the eight over after which Mayank Agarwal stepped on crease at No.3 and took in charge of the field. Even as Agarwal was playing his usual shots, Rahul was happy playing the role of a consolidating partner while on crease.
When asked about his role in the recent match against Mumbai Indians, Rahul said that he didn’t score a lot of runs in the matches against Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, as he wanted to spend some time in the middle. “I didn’t walk into this game with a lot of runs or time in the, middle. In both the games (vs RR and KKR), I got out pretty early. It was a conscious effort from my side to spend some time in the middle,” said Rahul.
I had been hitting the ball well in the nets as well so I am happy it came off says Rahul
He furthered by saying, that he wasn’t hitting the ball to start off but when the crease got handled by Gayle and Agarwal he got some time to spend in the middle. “I wasn’t hitting the ball well to start off with but the way Chris (Gayle) and Mayank (Agarwal) batted gave me time in the middle. I knew switching to fifth gear would be easy if I spent a little time in the middle. I had been hitting the ball well in the nets as well so I am happy it came off,” said Rahul.
He concluded by saying that he wanted some time and when Chris got batting, you just have to give him the strike. I just wanted to take my time and when Chris is going like that, you just have to keep feeding him the strike and not try to be a hero. I have learnt that with experience played for KXIP last year and I had the same role where I had to bat 20 over. The way Mayank batted also gave me a time,” concluded Rahul by saying.
