Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) skipper Ravichandran Ashwin has received severe backlash on the social media from the fans as well as former cricketers for his recent ugly looking ‘Mankading’ incident in the IPL 2019 game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). During the second innings of the match, Ashwin ‘Mankaded’ RR wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler, which invited a whole lot of controversies. In the aftermath of the scandal, most of the fans were of the opinion that Ashwin’s disgraceful act was surely in accordance with the rules and regulations of the game, but it was truly against the spirit of the game.
Royals’ wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler became the first player to be 'Mankaded' in the IPL history. The strange occurring took place when Ashwin shockingly whipped off the bails before even delivering the ball with Buttler standing out of the crease at the non-striker's end. After the controversial ‘Mankading’ appeal, Buttler was forced to walk back to the pavilion, but clearly Buttler and the Jaipur crowd were not at all convinced with the decision and condemned Ashwin's disgraceful actions.
It is in the law
Recently senior England fast bowler James Anderson condemned Ashwin’s actions in a video surfaced on the social media. During a recent conversation with India Today, Ashwin mentioned that this is all about perceptions and even went on to state that Anderson also might end up Mankading someone in future. He noted that his actions were within the law and thus, he did the same.
“Today Jimmy Anderson might feel that whatever I did was wrong. Maybe, tomorrow he might end up doing (Mankading) it. Who knows, it is all a question of perception of right and wrong. I don’t think in this case it is necessary because it is in the law and I did,” Ashwin was quoted as saying.
I don’t do anything that is illegal
Ashwin stated that everyone knows him as a person who does not commits anything illegal. He also noted that his team members stood by him during that phase. “Everybody who know me, it is very clear (to them) that I don’t do anything that is illegal. Even my team has stood behind me since then. A lot many players have come to me and said whatever I did was absolutely right,” he added.
