Clinical CSK Decimate KKR On A Sluggish Chennai Wicket

In the 23rd match of the fascinating Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 extravaganza, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) marched out victorious with a spectacular 7-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. For the second time in this season, the Chepauk wicket once again rested the undue advantage in the bowlers’ courtyard. The CSK bowling trio of Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir delivered sensational spells to reduce the visitors in a miserable state. Even after Andre Russell’s efficient half-century knock, KKR failed to put forward a competitive first innings total.

While in the second innings, the KKR bowlers also took some advantage of the helpful conditions on offer, restricting the run-scoring areas with some remarkable bowling effort. But the duo comprising of Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu never really showed any nerves and kept on battling hard to take the game as deep as possible. Towards the end, du Plessis crafted a significant innings to guide his team towards a splendid victory.

CSK bowlers blistering combined efforts leave KKR in absolute shambles

CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to field first because he reckoned that chasing would be a better option considering the dew factor. The CSK new ball bowlers, Deepak Chahar and Harbhajan Singh proved their skipper’s decision correct pretty quickly, removing both Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine with just eight runs on the board. Chahar continued to hurt the visitors further by sending back the duo of Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana pretty cheaply. After the initial assault, CSK leg-spinner Imran Tahir too joined the party, trapping the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Shubman Gill in quick time and in turn left KKR in complete disarray at 47 for 6.

At the halfway, KKR found itself in a dreadful position and the entire hopes rested on Andre Russell. Wickets still kept falling from one end, but Russell never retaliated to stop the onslaught from the other side. He smashed a brilliant unbeaten innings of 50 runs which consisted of 5 fours and 3 sixes, to help his team reach some sort of respectability with 108 runs on the board. But clearly the score was looking a below-par one and the CSK bowlers definitely deserved the due credit for it. Chahar was the pick of the CSK bowlers with three wickets to his name, while Harbhajan and Tahir picked up two wickets each.

Du Plessis’ valuable knock propels CSK in the chase

In the second innings, first Shane Watson and then Suresh Raina tried to end things pretty quickly, but both of them perished in that process that too within the first six overs of the powerplay. Even with defending a thin first innings total of 108 runs, the three KKR spinners, Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla bowled really well to restrict the run-scoring areas by bowling some tight lines.

But the pair of Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu decided to compensate the matters through a calm and composed approach. The duo comprising of du Plessis and Rayudu stitched a valuable partnership of 41 runs to help CSK attain a definite grip on the run-chase. Towards the end, du Plessis finished off the formalities to propel his team towards a comfortable win with more than two overs to spare. The CSK opener remained unbeaten till the end after scoring a valuable knock of 43 runs which included three boundaries.
