ICC World Cup 2019: England Announce Preliminary Squad For The Tournament

“The national selectors will announce the final squad only after the five ODIs against Pakistan, which end on May 19.”

Hosts England has announced a 15-man preliminary squad for the upcoming 2019 World Cup. The talking point of the squad announcement is the absence of the hottest property in the English cricket arenas, Jofra Archer. He has not been named in the preliminary pool for the quadrennial event scheduled to start from May 30 in England and Wales. However, Archer alongside Chris Jordan has been selected in the national team for the upcoming limited-overs series against Ireland and Pakistan.

Joe Denly earns dream call-up

Spin bowling all-rounder Joe Denly has been handed a dream World Cup call-up.  Alongside Denly, opening batsman Alex Hales, fast bowling all-rounder Liam Plunkett, David Wiley and Tom Curran have been named in the preliminary England squad for the mega event as well as for the five ODIs against Pakistan and one ODI, T20I squads against Ireland.

ECB’s national selector Ed Smith revealed that in respect to the ICC regulations, it was announced to name the preliminary squad of 15 members for the ICC World Cup 2019 before April 23. The national selectors will announce the final squad for the World Cup only after the five ODIs against Pakistan, which end on May 19.

“In line with ICC regulations, we have to name a preliminary squad of 15 for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup before April 23. However, all 17 players named in the Royal London ODIs against Pakistan can stake a claim to be in the final 15-man squad, finalized at the end of that series,” quoted Ed Smith.

Smith mentioned that the selection panel was very much impressed with Jofra Archer’s performances in the recent few months. “The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer’s performances in domestic and franchise cricket. He is a very talented and exciting cricketer,” the chief selector added.

Jordan, who has been out of the contention from the ODI team since September 2016, has come back in the reckoning after impressive performances against Sri Lanka and Windies in T20Is.

"Chris Jordan, a regular in IT20 squads over the past few years, has continued to develop as a cricketer - as we saw in the IT20s in the West Indies. He fully deserves his return to the ODI squad," Smith concluded.
