It is clearly evident that Australian opener David Warner has kept all ball-tampering ban talks aside with his sensational performance in the ongoing 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the flamboyant southpaw batsman has racked up a staggering tally of 692 runs in 12 games at an amazing average of 69.20.
In his last game of this season before returning for the World Cup preparations, Warner played a brilliant knock of 81 runs off just 56 balls to aid in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s convincing 45-run victory over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday.
We were a little apprehensive at the start
In his column for the Times of India, Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor VVS Laxman mentioned that the team management was surely a little apprehensive at the start of the season regarding Warner coming back experiencing a tough period off the cricket field. Laxman noted that they initially thought that Warner might be a bit rusty as he had a turbulent last year and the matters also got worsened due to the elbow injury which he suffered during the recent edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
“He (Warner) has had a turbulent last year or so, made worse by an elbow injury, and we were a little apprehensive at the start of the season that he might be a bit rusty. But Davey was truly outstanding. When the schedule was out, we all knew that he would be available for 12 games,” wrote VVS Laxman in his recent column for the Times of India.
Warner had promised to make 500 runs in the season
Laxman made a startling revelation in stating that Warner had promised head coach Tom Moody to score 500 runs in the season. “We were in the middle of a shoot in Hyderabad when Davey messaged head coach Tom Moody, promising us 500 runs for the season. It was no empty boast. It’s one thing to set goals, but the determined manner in which Davey chased it down was wonderful to watch,” Laxman furthered.
The SRH mentor further noted that Warner has played an integral role in nearing the team towards the outskirts of the playoffs. With a tally of 12 points, Sunrisers are very much comfortably placed in the embracing playoffs race. Laxman further mentioned that to fuse in this consistency with such a high strike-rate speaks volumes of Warner’s skills.
“To fuse consistency with a high strike-rate speaks volumes of Davey’s skills. It’s no surprise that he is a true match-winner, and one of the most impactful players in IPL history. He eventually signed off with 692 runs, one of the main reasons why we are in with a shot at the play-offs,” the Sunrisers mentor concluded.
