Delhi Capitals End Home Season With A Smashing Victory

In the first game of the Super IPL Saturday, Delhi Capitals (DC) registered a spectacular 5-wicket victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi. The  DC bowling duo comprising of Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra delivered sensational spells to rattle the opposition within a paltry first innings total. Riyan Parag did play a gutsy knock but he never got any support from the rest of the players.

However,  despite defending a below-par total, the RR bowlers did very well to somehow apply the brakes on the opposition’s progress early on, but eventually the scarcity of runs derailed the matters for the Royals. For Delhi, Rishabh Pant surprisingly played a sensible innings to take his team over the line. With this drubbing, RR have been knocked out of the competition, while DC have taken a step further towards the top two finish.

Parag’s gutsy fifty takes RR towards respectability after DC bowlers wreck havoc

After winning the toss and opting to bat first on a turning Delhi track, the visiting RR team got off to a horrible start as both their openers, Ajinkya Rahane and Liam Livingstone were sent back to the pavilion with just 20 runs on the board. Then the duo of Sanju Samson and Mahipal Lomror also got dismissed without giving much trouble to the scorers. DC new ball bowler Ishant Sharma wrecked havoc, claiming three of these four wickets in his opening spell. To restrict any further collapse, Shreyas Gopal was promoted up the order, but that idea also didn’t worked.

Delhi leg-spinner Amit Mishra too joined the party, picking three crucial wickets in the middle-overs stage. Amidst the tumbling of wickets, 17-year-old RR batsman Riyan Parag batted very much sensibly and compiled a gutsy knock of 50 runs which consisted of 4 fours and 2 sixes, to take his team towards a respectable total of 115 runs in their quota of 20 overs. For Delhi, Ishant and Mishra finished with three wickets, while Trent Boult picked up two wickets.

Rishabh Pant stands tall to sign off

Just like the opposition, Delhi Capitals too got off to a poor start as both the openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw got dismissed by RR leggie Ish Sodhi. However, then the duo of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant took the full toll, smacking Sodhi’s next over for a total of 17 runs. The DC skipper failed to convert his start to a big inning.

But then strangely out of everybody else, it was Rishabh Pant, who kept his calm to negate the quality bowling from the opposition. He smashed a sensational half-century knock to eventually steer his team to an emphatic win with more than three overs to spare in the game.

Brief Scores:

RR: 115/9 in 20 overs (Riyan Parag-50; Amit Mishra 3/17, Ishant Sharma 3/38)

DC: 121/5 in 16.1 overs (Rishabh Pant-53; Ish Sodhi 3/26, Shreyas Gopal 2/21)

Result: Delhi Capitals won the match by 5 wickets.
