IPL 2019, Match 56- MI Vs KKR, Preview: Hosts Chase Top-Two Finish, While Knights Aim To Seal Playoffs Berth

In the second game of the blockbuster Sunday (May 5), Mumbai Indians (MI) will be locking horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is also the last match of the league stages of VIVO IPL 2019. The home team has already qualified for the playoffs of the tournament but they would surely want to win this game in order to finish as one of the top two teams which will provide them two opportunities to qualify for the finals.

On the other hand, the Knight Riders also desperately need a victory to become the fourth team in the playoffs battle. It was just last week when these two teams had their first meeting of the season where the Dinesh Karthik-led team recorded a brilliant 5-wicket victory over the visiting Mumbai team at the iconic Eden Gardens.

MI’s backstory

The Rohit Sharma-led team is coming into this match after recording a sensational victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the thrilling Super Over finish. This win also helped the three-time champions book a berth in the playoffs stage. They would now be looking to finish as one of the top two teams and for that to happen, they surely need to sort out some of the concerning areas.

The dependency on the openers’ starts and Hardik Pandya’s finishing fireworks has clearly been evident this year. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya have disappointed with the bat and that has surely hurt their chances. But the bowlers have done a wonderful job this season and it has been a collective effort. They will be expected to come good in this game as well.

KKR’s backstory

The Dinesh Karthik-led team will be entering this match after registering a comprehensive 7-wicket victory over the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the previous outing. The KKR team management will be mighty impressed with the performance of the batters in the last two victories against KXIP and MI. Both the openers, Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn have been at their very best in the last two matches and they would be expected to continue with their sensational form in this game as well. The likes of Andre Russell and skipper Dinesh Karthik have also been in a great form.

On the other hand, the bowlers have still not arrived to the party in a collective manner. The likes of Harry Gurney, Piyush Chawla, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell have bowled well in patches but also leaked a lot of runs. Thus, they will be hoping to put forward an improved effort in this important match.

Mumbai Indians’ likely Playing XI

After recording a brilliant victory in the last match, the MI team management has absolutely no major reasons to tinker with the winning combination. This means that the duo comprising of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock will open the innings. Evin Lewis has not looked convincing in the three games played thus far, but he will still retain his place. It is likely that Suryakumar Yadav, who has struggled in the last few matches, will have to make way for the comeback of Yuvraj Singh.

The trio of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard will play the role of the floaters. Barider Sran, who ended with horrid figures in the last two matches, is likely to get another chance. Malinga, Bumrah and Sran will be the frontline pacers, while Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya will be the two spinners.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Evin Lewis/Ishan Kishan, Yuvraj Singh/Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Barinder Sran/Beuran Hendricks, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ likely Playing XI

Just like the hosts, the Knights will also most probably field the same team. Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill will open the batting in this game as well. In the middle-order department, the likes of Robin Uthappa, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik and Nitish Rana will have to take up the responsibility. However, their batting positions will be decided in accordance with the situation of the game.

Rinku Singh could make way for Kuldeep Yadav’s comeback in the important game. Sandeep Warrier did a beautiful job in the last two games and he will handle the pace bowling department along with Harry Gurney. Piyush Chawla and Sunil Narine are the two frontline spinners and Kuldeep’s inclusion will give them a boost.

Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Chris Lynn, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Andre Russell, Robin Uthappa, Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, Piyush Chawla, Sandeep Warrier, Harry Gurney.
