You Can’t Afford To Make Any Mistakes Against Australia: Gulbadin Naib

Afghanistan came against a champion side in their opening World Cup 2019 clash and the five-time triumphant Australian team didn’t have much of worries in getting the better of the opposition.  The Aaron Finch-led team started its World Cup title defence with a sensational 7-wicket victory against Afghanistan in their opening game of the tournament at the County Ground in Bristol. The Australian bowler duo comprising of Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa delivered impressive spell to bowl out the Afghanistan team for a pretty modest first innings total.

In the second innings, skipper Aaron Finch got his team off to a fabulous start with a quick-fire half-century, after which his opening partner, David Warner remained unbeaten till the end for a brilliant knock to steer his team to an emphatic win. With this victory, Australia have added two crucial opening points to their tally and are placed fourth on the points table.

Hope that upcoming pitches will offer more help for spinners, says Gulbadin Naib

While speaking about the loss and the performance of his team, Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib revealed that the track didn’t offer much for the spinners as they would have expected. He did praise his spinners, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman for the way they bowled on that wicket. He also hoped that the pitches in the upcoming matches of the long tournament will certainly offer some more assistance towards the spinners.

“I am hoping that upcoming pitches offer some more help for the spinners. Maybe towards the middle of the tournament. Still, I would credit Rashid and Mujeeb for the way they bowled on these tracks,” said Gulbadin Naib during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Naib stated that against a champion side like Australia, teams cannot think of making any mistakes. He noted that since they got off to a disappointing start, losing quick wickets at the top, they were on the back foot. The Afghan skipper also revealed that the Australian pacers never allowed them to come back in the game.

“They (Australia) are a champion side, so you cannot afford to make any mistakes against them. Since we didn’t have a good start, we were on the back foot but Rahmat Shah and Nabi tried to repair things. But their pacers at good speeds kept pegging us back. Good to see our fast bowlers doing well, especially Hamid,” Naib added.
