India registered their first win in the ICC World Cup 2019 against South Africa who has already suffered defeat by the hands of the hosts, England. Talking about the same, Virat Kohli, the Indian team skipper lauded the match winning 100 against South Africa that too in challenging conditions. He even appreciated the star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah who played an instrumental role in registering his side’s first win.
The wait was very long and then you get a game like this where it was challenging throughout
India waited a long time to play their first match in the ICC World Cup 2019 but outplayed their opponents and started their World Cup campaign on a positive note.
“The wait was very long and then you get a game like this where it was challenging throughout. From our point of view it was important to start on the right note. We might not have had the run rate, but if you look at how the game went and how the pitch behaved, it was challenging. Hats off to Rohit, his innings was special. And also the guys who batted around him. I would say it’s a professional win,” says Kohli.
The first win is always important. On the field, we were confident as a group
Kohli further said that South Africa decided to bat first, although if India would have won the toss, they would’ve selected to bowl anyway. Jasprit Bumrah was on fire as he removed openers like Quinton de Kock and Hashim Alma during the early innings of the game. “We were going to bowl first. They were coming off two losses, so you have to make sure you get the first 15 overs right. Jasprit is operating at a different level to be honest. The way he’s bowling, the batsmen feel the pressure all the time. Not the other way round,” Says Kohli.
He further went on by saying, that the first wins are always important as they boost the self-confidence of the team. “The first win is always important. On the field, we were confident as a group. With the bat, we had to work our way through because of the attack they have. That’s where Rohit’s innings was very very special. You need experienced guys to stand up.”
Their bowling was magnificent
The South African skipper said that the bowling department of the team was magnificent and they have got good spinners and fast bowlers with them. “Their bowling was magnificent, they have got good fast bowlers and spinners. We did well to pull it back with the bat before their spinners ran through our middle order. “Ours is a change room that is hurting, trying to make sure we keep fighting but we are making mistakes all the time,” said du Plessis.
