The win of India over Pakistan is special for many reasons. As for the all-rounder Vijay Shankar, he made his appearance in the World Cup after striking two important wickets of the Pakistani squad. Henceforth, Shankar proved his importance in the team and why has he been a part of the Indian World Cup campaign. While he was being selected by the BCCI during the announcement of the squad for the World Cup who will be touring to England and Wales, he was referred to as ‘three-dimensional player’ by MSK Prasad. He took wickets of Imam-ul-Haq and the skipper, Sarfaraz Ahmed will proved to be beneficial for the team. “I knew that I was batting well but my handy bowling makes me useful,” said Shankar.
I need to keep on improving in all aspects
It was the very first delivery of Shankar when he grabbed a wicket after Bhuvneshwar Kumar hopped off the field owing to his hamstring injury. “I need to keep on improving on all aspects of game and that’s how I look at things, so that when situation comes I am ready to face it. I was always focused on my preparation,” said Shankar. He returned to the pavilion with impressive figures of 2/22 in 5.4 overs.
He was initially the answer to the number four debacle of the Indian team put now he is ready to bat at number six and seven as the team management will be prompting Hardik Pandya up in the order just in case if the top three can go onto battle till the 35th over. “First few innings during Australia series, I batted at Nos 6 or 7. When playing for your country, you should be ready to adapt yourself to different situation,” he said.
It was a great opportunity for me
He said that getting a wicket off the first ball was a pleasant surprise for him and it is very rare for someone who take an important wicket in their first delivery in the World Cup. “That was a surprise for me as it’s rare for someone to get injured and I come in as replacement. Getting a wicket off first ball is special thing for me.
“It was a great opportunity for me to make my World Cup debut against Pakistan as a lot of people would have watched the game. I just wanted to enjoy the moment as you don’t get to experience this often,” he concluded.
