In the sixth match of the exciting Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2019 extravaganza, the Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) handed a 41-run defeat to the Ruby Trichy Warriors (RTW) at the Indian Cement Company Ground in Tirunelveli. The Super Gillies’ batters first battled hard to reach a fighting total and then left-arm spinner R Alexander bowled a fabulous spell in the second innings to leave the Warriors in absolute tatters.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, the Super Gillies got off to a poor start losing the wicket of opening batsman Kaushik Gandhi in just the second over of the innings. The pair of Ganga Sridhar Raju and Gopinath then got together to resurrect the innings and stitched a fine stand of 58 runs for the second wicket. However, both these batters failed to convert their respective starts into big scores and got out in pairs.
The duo of Murugan Ashwin and Harish Kumar then added 56 runs for the fifth-wicket partnership before the latter got out after scoring 39 runs off 23 balls. Ashwin also fell pretty soon contributing with 18 off 24 balls.
Eventually, the Super Gillies managed to post 148 runs for the loss of six wickets in their quota of 20 overs. For the Warriors, Saravan Kumar picked up two wickets, while the rest of the bowlers took a scalp each.
Alexander’s five-wicket haul rattles the Warriors
Chasing a target of 149 runs in the second innings, the Warriors started off things on a horrific note as they lost three wickets in the form of S Aravind, R Sathyanarayan and Maaruthi Raghav within first six overs of the powerplay. Chandrasekar Ganapathy and Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore also got out pretty soon leaving their team in a big trouble at 51 for 5.
The Warriors kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and on the other end the required rate also started to reach the impossible barriers. Super Gillies’ left-arm spinner R Alexander bowled a sensational spell in which he picked up a superb five-wicket haul to leave the opposition in complete tatters. Eventually they just managed score 107 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their quota of 20 overs. For the Gillies, Alexander took five wickets, while G Periyaswamy took two crucial scalps as well.
