TNPL 2019, Match9- CSG Vs KK, Preview: Struggling Kaalais Up Against In-Form Super Gillies

In the ninth match of the exciting Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2019 edition, Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) will lock horns with the Karaikudi Kaalai (KK) at the Indian Cement Company Ground in Tirunelveli on July 26, Friday. Both the teams are coming into this game after witnessing contrasting results unfold in their respective previous outings. After the heart-breaking loss in the first game against the Dindigul Dragons, the Chepauk Super Gillies were back on track in their last match. Against the Ruby Trichy Warriors, they won by a 41-margin to register the first win of the tournament.

This victory would have come as a huge sigh of relief for the Gillies after the terrible 2018 season where they just won one game. It’d be ideal for them to build upon this momentum and register a few more wins.

On the other hand, things have gone the other way for Karaikudi Kaalai. After just about winning their first game, the side was bowled out for a paltry 67 in the previous encounter versus VB Kanchi Veerans. Thus, they will clearly look to get back on track and this should be an exciting contest.

Head to Head Battle

           Chepauk Super Gillies

                Karaikudi Kaalai

Chepauk Super Gillies likely Playing XI

Super Gillies responded to their opening defeat by shuffling their batting order but they stuck with the same XI and were rewarded with victory last time out. Captain Kaushik Gandhi is due some runs after two failures, but his leadership position means it will take more than that for him to lose his opening spot. R Alexander is one on the stand-out bowlers of the tournament so far, having taken 3-11 in the opening game and then an outstanding, match-winning 5-9 last time out. The wickets included four of the top five.

Murugan Ashwin took 2-15 in the first game and an economical 0-15 last time out, while his batting is relied on more in the TNPL than it is in the IPL too – he has hit 34 runs in his two innings. S Harish Kumar played two useful innings so far down the order, including his 39 from 23 balls last time out – a knock which included four sixes. He can also contribute with his right-arm seam, which brought seven wickets in last season’s competition.

Probable XI: Kaushik Gandhi (c), Ganga Sridhar Raju, Hari Gopinath, Murugan Ashwin, Uthirasamy Sasidev, Harish Kumar, A Aarif (wk), Dev Rahul, M Siddharth, R Alexander, G Periyaswamy.

Karaikudi Kaalai likely Playing XI

Vijaykumar Yo Mahesh was dismissed first ball having replaced S Swaminathan in the starting line-up. Swaminathan had not bowled in the win against Ruby Trichy Warriors. It remains to be seen if the swing-bowling all-rounder will retain his place after the heavy defeat last time out.  Srikkanth Anirudha was the hero of the first game, Karaikudi Kaalai learned what they miss when the captain and wicket-keeper-batsman does not score – he fell cheaply last time out, but his form in the opening game, hitting 58 from 36 balls, showed his capabilities.

R Rajkumar is tidy with the ball and capable of some lusty blows with the bat, the all-rounder hit an unbeaten 28 from 13 balls in the first game and took 0-28 with the ball – the most economical bowler – last time out. Sunil Sam took two wickets in each of the two matches so far, including 2-38 last time out, and also bowled the super over as Karaikudi Kaalai beat Ruby Trichy Warriors.

Probable XI: V Aditya, Srikkanth Anirudha (c, wk), Laxmesha Suryaprakash, Rajhamany Srinivasan, Maan Bafna, M Shajahan, R Rajkumar, Vijaykumar Yo Mahesh, Sunil Sam, Velidi Lakshman, S Mohan Prasath.
