"Today they successfully passed the 2 KM fitness test challenge", one of the sources in Colombo, confirmed.
Danushka Gunathilake was marginally ahead and ran the 2 Kilometer distance within a time frame of 8 minutes and 23 seconds, while Bhanuka Rajapaksa did it in 8 minutes and 27 seconds".
Newly married Kusal Mendis too passed the test in 8 min. 18 seconds. He did not participate in last week’s test due to his wedding on the same day.
In the meantime, former Sri Lankan opener Charith Senanayake has stressed that the players should be match-fit and not the marathon fit.
Speaking exclusively over the telephone, he said, "When others are hell-bent on strict fitness standards which is a fair call, perhaps West Indies think that what’s good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. Rahkeem Cornwall proves match fitness and skill too is equally important".
"I don’t think West Indies think that fitness standards are the only yardstick to base selections. If that was the case, Rahkeem Cornwall would have never played or won a series for them. How many KM’s do you think he (Cornwall) would have run in 8.35 minutes", Senanayake, who was also the manager of the Sri Lankan team asks.
Cornwall, who weighs 140 kg was the Player of the Match in the last Test against Bangladesh.
