In a recent revelation by a BCCI official, it is known that there will be no automatic extensions for any of the Indian coaches and their contracts will end post the World Cup 2019. The last season, Anil Kumble had a rather awkward unceremonious exit from his post of a national coach with Ravi Shastri being named as the coach on the national side. Shastri prior to his appointment served as the team manager for the Indian national team. One thing that cannot be disapproved is that the Team India has thrived a lot under Shastri’s guidance and his stints with Virat Kohli have made India reach the 2nd spot in the ICC ODI rankings.
The end of World Cup will also result in the end of Shastri’s tenure
India will be all ready to fight the ultimate battle for the 50-over ICC World Cup commencing from May 30 in England and Wales. However, post the completion of the World Cup will also mark an end to the coaching tenure of Ravi Shastri along with other coaches as well. Earlier there was a clause that could lead to the extension in the coaching contract however there is no such provision with Shastri’s coaching contract. It was informed by a senior BCCI official that the contract of all the current coaches and support staff doesn’t come with an extension. If Shastri wants to side with the national team as a head coach, then he has to go through the selection process again.
“From Anil Kumble’s time, the service contract of the coaches and support staff don’t have an extension or renewal clause. Therefore, even if India win the World Cup under Shastri’s coaching, he will have to come through the fresh recruitment process even though he will be a direct entry into the shortlisted panel as the current coach,” said the BCCI official.
Everything will happen after the World Cup says the BCCI official
It was informed that all the contracts of the current coaches including the head coach, bowling coach, fielding coach and the batting coach will end post the World Cup. This end will also be marked for all the support staff members as well.
“Shastri, Sanjay Bangar (batting coach), Bharat Arun (bowling coach) and R Sridhar (fielding coach), their contracts will end with India’s last match in the World Cup. With only 14 days left for the inaugural World Test Championship matches against the West Indies, we need to complete the process in due time. But everything will happen after the World Cup,” said the BCCI official.
