The Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) started its Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 campaign on a great note. In three games played so far, the team has won twice and lost a close encounter against the Delhi Capitals in the one-over eliminator. However, there are a few concerns which the side needs to sort out before their fourth match of the season against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) scheduled to be held later in the day at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
We have a formidable batting order
Barring the last game against Delhi, KKR batters have played exceptionally well in the season. The top-order as well as the middle-order has contributed significantly in the season so far. However, the only batsman whose performance has been under the barrel is Chris Lynn. He has managed to score just 37 runs from three games.
“I would say these guys are also match-winners. I am sure Chris Lynn will be joining the party soon. We have a formidable batting order,” said KKR assistant coach Simon Katich.
We trusted his game
Andre Russell has grabbed massive headlines in just the first week of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 extravaganza. The big-hitting West Indian has contributed with match-winning performances in the first two games against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab (SRH). He blasted a stunning knock of 49 runs off just 19 balls and also scored a blistering innings of 48 runs against Punjab. He was adjudged as the Man of the Match in both the games. Russell also played a blistering knock of 62 runs off just 28 balls in the recent game against Delhi Capitals (DC).
“We trusted his (Russell) game. The only thing I spoke to him about was to stand for long in the middle overs. Because he is so powerful and the teams (opposition) are trying to shut him down back early in the innings,” he added.
However, Katich also noted that Russell is not their only match-winner. The coach reckoned that the likes of Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Shubman Gill have also contributed with significant performances in the tournament.
“He is a star player. No doubt about it. But there are other guys who have contributed from the other end. Apart from him, (Robin) Uthappa, Nitish (Rana) and (Dinesh) Karthik are the guys who played brilliant knocks. I would appreciate the way young lad Shubman (Gill) hit some amazing blows in the end (vs SRH),” concluded the KKR assistant coach.
