Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Abhishek Nayar reckons that Dinesh Karthik’s versatility should get him a berth in the Indian squad for the 2019 World Cup. The MSK Prasad-led selection committee will be meeting in Mumbai on April 15 in order to pick the 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming 2019 World Cup. The highlighting discussion which is currently doing the rounds is who out of Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik will get the final backing as the reserve wicket-keeper batsman for the mega event.
He could bat well up the order
Nayar deserves a lot of credit for Karthik’s recent transformation which has also reflected in his performances off late. During a recent interview, Nayar revealed that in the past two years, Karthik has showed how versatile he is. The former KKR cricketer mentioned that the wicket-keeper batsman has the ability to play as a finisher as well as middle-order player.
“In the past two years he has showed us how versatile he is. He is not only a finisher, but could bat well up the order. He gives you that versatility also being a wicketkeeper and a good fielder,” said Abhishek Nayar.
He is ideal to bat at number four
Nayar further went on to mention that along with offering as a wicket-keeper option, Karthik can also be part of the Indian side purely as a specialist batsman. He noted that Karthik is the ideal pick to bat at the number four position. “He is not only a keeper backup, but also a batsman backup who can come and field. We’ve seen how well he fields and the kind of catches he has taken. He is also ideal to bat at number four. The kind batsman he’s you can use him anywhere in the batting order. He is someone who should be definitely in the World Cup squad,” he added.
In the World Cup you need experience
During a recent interview, KKR head coach Jacques Kallis revealed that if he had been decision maker, he would have picked Karthik in that World Cup squad purely due to his experience, which is very much needed in a big tournament such as the 50-overs mega event. Kallis reckoned that Karthik knows how to play in accordance with the different situations of the game. The former South African cricketer noted that the Tamil Nadu cricketer is aware of how to maneuver the field and score at a rapid pace.
“I would pick DK for his experience, in the World Cup you need experience. He knows how to play situations and he can control the middle-order and bat at a good rate. Not too many dot balls and India would be silly if they didn’t pick him,” quoted Jacques Kallis.
