In the 26th match of the exciting Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 extravaganza, Delhi Capitals (DC) recorded a brilliant performance to register a convincing 7-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. DC opener Shikhar Dhawan came back amongst the runs with a stupendous unbeaten 97-run knock to stamp his authority over the struggling KKR bowling line-up and in turn propelled his team to an emphatic victory.
Dhawan had been out of form for quite a while and thus, the speculations of him being dropped from the Indian side for the upcoming 2019 World Cup also started doing the rounds on social media. But the senior Indian opener has ended all the rife by producing a sensational knock to announce his form arrival in IPL 2019.
He is a class act
During the post-match press conference, Delhi Capitals advisor Sourav Ganguly praised Dhawan for his staggering match-winning innings. Ganguly revealed that the opener has the ability to take the game away from the opposition once he gets set on the crease. The former Indian cricketer reckoned that the franchise was very desperate to include Dhawan in the side and it feels good that the call is paying off.
“It was more like a Shikhar Dhawan innings, once he gets set, he takes the game away. He is a class act. We were desperate to take Shikhar, good that he is coming off. It is an important phase of the tournament,” said Sourav Ganguly.
Ganguly stated that the IPL form will not matter in the upcoming 2019 World Cup as the formats are pretty different. He also noted the fact that Shikhar has a great track record in the ICC tournaments held in English conditions. “World Cup is a different format… and Shikhar plays very well in England. He is a fantastic one-day cricketer,” he added.
He is only going to better
During Delhi’s innings with the bat, DC batting pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant relieved all the pressure of the run-chase with a sensational 100-plus partnership. Dhawan came back amongst the runs with a magnificent knock, while Pant also contributed with entertaining and flashy innings, to guide Delhi towards a comfortable victory.
“According to the situation, we pushed him up to four to give him more opportunity to bat. He is a great talent. He is only going to better,” Ganguly inferred on Pant’s performance
