The Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) succumbed to its second consecutive defeat of the season in the last night’s game against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the first innings, KKR registered an imposing total on the back of opener Shubman Gill’s fantastic half-century knock and Andre Russell’s terrific cameo performance.
However, in the run-chase, DC batting duo comprising of Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant stitched a brilliant century partnership to help their team emerge out victorious in a comfortable manner. In spite of second straight loss, KKR are still very much rated at the top of the charts, holding the second position on the points table.
It shows his class as player
In the absence of the two regular openers, Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine, Shubman Gill earned a surprising promotion at the top of the order and in turn also took the initiative to prove his worth and talent, racking up his second IPL half-century that too in his first innings as an opener. Gill grabbed the opportunity with both hands, smashing a phenomenal innings of 65 runs off just 39 balls which included 7 fours and 2 sixes.
“Today Shubman used the opportunity and did really well. It shows his class as player. He’s able to stay calm under pressure situations, which is a very unique skill to have. He has delivered for us over and over again,” said KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik in a conversation with the media reporters during the post-match press conference.
We have been straightforward with him
Since last season, Gill has been playing role of a floater for KKR and most of the times he has batted down the order. Karthik revealed that Gill is aware of the fact that whenever there is an opportunity, he will be promoted up the order. The skipper mentioned that the team management has been very much straightforward with the youngster and he too appreciates that.
“He realises that whenever there’s an opportunity he will be sent up the order, if not, he’s pretty okay batting at No 7 and finishing of games whenever he gets the opportunity. I think we’ve been very straightforward with him and he appreciates that,” Karthik added.
