IPL 2019, Match 33- SRH Vs CSK, Preview: Struggling Sunrisers Aim To Take Down Chennai’s Dominant Streak

Amidst the intense IPL 2019 rivalry week, one big battle is still to be unfolded. In the 33rd game of the tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have set forth their first meeting of the season against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 17. Both the teams are coming into this game after witnessing contrasting results in their respective previous games. With six convincing victories in its baggage, CSK have already virtually qualified for the playoffs, while the Hyderabad-based franchise are currently languishing at the sixth spot on the points table.

SRH’s backstory

The Kane Williamson-led team will be entering this game after conceding a disappointing 39-run loss in the last match against Delhi Capitals (DC). After starting off the season with three brilliant victories in the first four games, the 2016 champions have almost depleted the initial lead, crumbling to three straight losses. However, the concerns for the SRH team management seem to similar ones which have been haunting them thus far in the T20 competition. The lacklustre form of the middle-order batters has been one of the biggest concerns and they are absolutely showing zero intent to improve their game in order to help the team’s fortunes.

Barring one or two standout performances, SRH’s bowling has not been upto the mark this season. The likes of Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma have failed to pick up wickets at regular intervals and rise on to the occasion. Khaleel Ahmed’s four-fer in the last game will help himself as well as others with some confidence to put forward an improved show in the rest of the season.

CSK’s backstory

The MS Dhoni-led team has witnessed a high-flying run thus far in the season. They are coming into this game after a sensational five-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The CSK batting likes of Faf du Plessis, skipper MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav have been in a remarkable form thus far in the tournament and with Suresh Raina coming back to his own in the last match, CSK’s batting department have almost covered all the major bases. However, the team management will still be slight concerned about Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu’s consistent struggles.

The bowlers have also displayed sensational performances so far in the season, with the spinners and fast bowlers both doing really well. They will be looking to continue the good work in this game as well.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s likely Playing XI

Even after conceding a heartening loss in the previous encounter, the Sunrisers are likely to field an unchanged eleven in this game. The in-form explosive duo comprising of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow will be opening the batting. SRH skipper Kane Williamson failed to come good in his comeback game and thus, he will be desperate to put forward a significant performance in the upcoming game. Ricky Bhui replaced Manish Pandey in the previous game and even after a failure, he will retain his spot. The other middle-order batters will be Vijay Shankar and Deepak Hooda.

Abhishek Sharma also had a decent debut for Sunrisers and he will too get another chance to prove his worth. He will partner Rashid Khan in the spin bowling department, while Khaleel, Bhuvneshwar and Sandeep will be the three pacers.

Probable XI: Jonny Bairstow (wk), David Warner, Kane Williamson (c), Vijay Shankar, Ricky Bhui, Deepak Hooda, Abhishek Sharma, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed.

Chennai Super Kings’ likely Playing XI

On the other hand, the CSK team management has some strong reasons to tinker with the winning combination. Shane Watson has been given a lot of opportunities but he has consistently failed to grab them. Thus, he will make way for Sam Billings and in Watson’s absence, Ambati Rayudu will move up the order to give company to Faf du Plessis at the top. The in-form Suresh Raina will head the middle-order department which will include the likes of skipper MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav and Sam Billings.

The table-toppers will once again field three spinners in Ravindra Jadeja, Imran Tahir and Mitchell Santner.  While the duo comprising of Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar will take care of the fast bowling duties.

Probable XI: Ambati Rayudu, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Kedar Jadhav, Sam Billings, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Imran Tahir.
