The Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) succumbed to their sixth successive loss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, with the three-wicket defeat at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday. In the first innings, KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik stole the show with his scintillating 97-run unbeaten knock to power his team towards a pretty challenging first innings total. In reply, the visitors got off to an explosive start, but the KKR spinners pulled things back very efficiently.
However, towards the end, RR’s young duo of Riyan Parag and Jofra Archer batted amazingly well to snatch an unbelievable victory from almost the jaws of defeat. With this win, the Royals have also managed to retain its playoffs hopes as well.
It wasn’t our day
During the post-match presentation ceremony, Karthik revealed that he is a little bit disappointed to not end up on the winning side. He reckoned that it wasn’t the home team’s day. Karthik noted that it is always heartening to lose close games on consistent basis.
“Little disappointed. Thought we were in it to win, but it wasn’t our day. I have kept saying that winning always feels good, but when you lose close games like this you feel ‘wow, when are we gonna get there’,” quoted Dinesh Karthik.
A lot will boil down to how KKR trust me as a leader entails Karthik
With this defeat, KKR have now lost seven games this season and the two-time champions now find themselves reduced in a miserable position wherein they first need to win all of their remaining three matches and then wait for the remaining results to also fall in their favour. Karthik stated that it is very important to keep the mood of the dressing room on the positive side during such situations.
“Happy with the way boys fought, not happy with the result. A lot of it will boil down to how much they trust me as a leader. It’s important to keep the mood of the dressing room good. The fact that we are not able to cross the winning line is not a good feeling,” the KKR skipper concluded.
