Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) suffered a clinical 45-run defeat at the hands of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. The home team registered a massive first innings total on the back of David Warner’s phenomenal knock and a great finishing touch given by the lower-order batsmen.
While in the second innings, the bowler duo comprising of Khaleel Ahmed and Rashid Khan bowled amazingly well to restrict the opposition and in turn propelled KXIP to a remarkable win. With this loss, Kings XI Punjab team have reduced themselves in a very tough position, wherein they need to win both their remaining games as well as want the other results to come in their favour.
We were just completely outplayed
After the game, KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that his team got completely outplayed in the match and also noted that this has never happened to them thus far in the season. He mentioned that it isn’t right to think about what has already happened in the past. He stated that it gets very important sometimes to stay in the present. However, he reckoned that things didn’t turn out to be great for them in the outing.
“It’s not right to think about what’s happened in the past. It’s important to stay in the present. Today is one of those days where we were just completely outplayed, which hasn’t happened this season,” quoted Ravichandran Ashwin during the post-match presentation ceremony.
It’s a probably a balance issue
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, SRH’s new opening combo of David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha got their team off to a smashing start. The duo comprising of Warner and Saha never looked in any sort of pressure, blasting a terrific total of 77 runs in the first six overs of the powerplay. Ashwin noted that they have struggled to chase the totals above the 190-run mark. However, the skipper also mentioned that the stage has arrived in this IPL when they need to keep winning every game.
“I thought we started really poorly in the powerplay but we pulled it back in the end. If you see through the tournament, we have been struggling to chase anything above 190. That’s probably a balance issue. It’s straightforward. We have to keep winning at this stage in the IPL,” Ashwin added.
