It has been clearly evident this year that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) becomes an all different side in the presence of skipper MS Dhoni. The veteran wicket-keeper batsman has missed two games in the ongoing 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to back injury and the World Cup 2019 coming closer. CSK conceded two massive losses to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI), when Dhoni didn’t played and then on his return, the Chennai-based franchisee have looked as a complete different side in the following game.
MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings recorded a resounding 80-run victory over the Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday. The home team reached an imposing first innings total on the back of Suresh Raina’s excellent half-century knock and some great finishing touch by the Dhoni-Jadeja combo.
While in the second innings, the CSK spin pair of Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja displayed sensational combined efforts to bowl out the visitors for a paltry total and in turn steer their team to a remarkable win. With this victory, the MS Dhoni-led team have once again claimed the top spot on the points table and also ended their home season on a winning note.
Losing him as a batsman is always difficult
Suresh Raina addressed the media reporters during the post-match press conference and revealed that Dhoni’s absence as a captain can still be dealt with, however, as a batsman, it is always difficult to replace him. The wicket-keeper batsman is currently the highest run-getter for CSK, scoring a fabulous tally of 358 runs at a phenomenal average of 119.33. In yesterday’s game, Dhoni played an entertaining unbeaten cameo of 44 runs off just 22 balls to guide his team towards a pretty challenging first innings total of 179 runs.
“I think losing him (Dhoni) as a captain is not an issue, losing him as a batsman is always difficult for us. That’s what happened for us against Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. When he comes to the crease a lot of pressure is created for other teams. When he is not in the team, we see the difference,” said Suresh Raina in the post-match press conference.
Raina noted that Dhoni has done a terrific job both as a batsman and mentor of the CSK team during the last year as well as this year. The left-hander also mentioned that Dhoni will only call time on his own terms and will continue to play for Chennai Super Kings until he wants to.
“He has done well in the last couple of years as a batsman as well team mentor. So probably you may see me more next year when he is done but I need more of his calibre. But he will continue as long as he wants to play for Chennai, you know him and Chennai,” Raina added.
