Ajinkya Rahane To Lead The Rajasthan Royals After Smith’s Departure

In the first game of the Super IPL Saturday (May 4), Delhi Capitals (DC) will be squaring up against the Rajasthan Royals at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi. This is the last game of the season for both the teams. The home team has already qualified for the playoffs stage while the Rajasthan Royals desperately need a win in order to stay alive in the contention.

In the recent development, the Royals have reappointed Ajinkya Rahane as their skipper for the remainder of the season due to the regular skipper, Steve Smith having returned back home for Australia’s World Cup 2019 preparations.

Earlier Smith took over the reins midway in the ongoing 12th season of the IPL from Rahane. Under the latter’s leadership, the inaugural IPL champions had managed to record a single victory from six games. On the other hand, Smith-led team had won four of their seven matches with one ending without a result.

Presently with a tally of 11 points in their baggage, the Rajasthan Royals are still very much alive in this embracing playoffs race but they are in need for the other results to fall in their favour as well.

Rahane has always been a great guiding force

While speaking on Rahane’s reappointment, Zubin Bharucha, the Head of Cricket at Rajasthan Royals, spoke in high praise of the skipper. Bharucha mentioned that Rahane has always been a great guiding force for the RR team. He revealed that Rahane once again accepted the captaincy role with great courage and character in taking the responsibility.

“Jinks (Rahane) has always been a great guiding force for the team. We have requested Ajinkya to take on the captaincy of the team; as a true Royal he has shown great courage and character in graciously accepting the responsibility, which accompanies this role, whilst it would have been easier for him to take a back seat and focus solely on his batting.”

“A true team man and a true Royal, we are extremely fortunate to have characters like him playing this sport and even prouder he is part of the Rajasthan Royals franchise,” quoted Zubin Bharucha on Friday.

Bharucha also stated that Rahane has consistently been part of the leadership team and has constantly assisted in the decision
