IPL 2019, Qualifier 1- MI Vs CSK, Preview: A Nerve-Wracking Encounter Awaits In Chennai

After some thrilling and intruding battles in the league stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 edition, it is time to shift the entire focus on the playoffs. In the embracing Qualifier 1 encounter, the table-toppers, Mumbai Indians (MI) will be locking horns with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 7, Tuesday. Both the teams will be putting in their best of efforts in this game as a victory will ensure the berth in the Grand Finale of VIVO IPL 2019.

These two teams have met each other twice earlier in the tournament and on both the occasions, Mumbai Indians emerged victorious with comprehensive wins. There has been an appealing rivalry between both the three-time title winners of the lucrative league.

MI’s backstory

The Rohit Sharma-led team is arriving into this game after recording a resounding 9-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the previous outing. This win helped Mumbai finish the league stages at the top position on the points tally. The victory also settled most of their weaker areas and the concerning points as well. The biggest positive achieved from the last match was Suryakumar Yadav coming back amongst the runs and also Rohit playing a match-winning knock.

On the other hand, the bowlers have been very consistent in the tournament. The likes of Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah and young Rahul Chahar have done amazingly well this season and they would be expected to come good in this crucial game as well.

CSK’s backstory

The MS Dhoni-led team is coming into this game after suffering a massive 6-wicket defeat at the hands of the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the previous outing. Nonetheless, the defending champions finished the league stages with nine wins from 14 games and a fabulous tally of 18 points. However, the CSK team management will have to quickly sort out some of the weaker areas in order to book a direct spot in the finals. The two biggest disappointments from the batting perspective have been the horrid struggles of Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu.

They would be expected to trash off their poor forms and bring back the good old 2018 IPL days in this important encounter. But their bowling has been very much upto the mark in this season thus far as both the fast bowlers as well as the spinners have bowled really well.

Mumbai Indians’ likely Playing XI

After recording a clinical victory in the last management, the table-toppers have no major reasons to change the winning combination. Thus, the duo comprising of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock will once again take their guards as the openers. The in-form Suryakumar Yadav will come in at three and Ishan Kishan at the fourth spot. The trio of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard will continue to don the floater’s role.

With the fabulous form he has shown in this season thus far, Hardik will be the man to watch out for in this nerve-wracking encounter. He will assist the pace bowling trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga and Mitchell McClenaghan. The duo of Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar will be part of the spin bowling department.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan, Rahul Chahar, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah.

Chennai Super Kings’ likely Playing XI

Even after regular failures, the CSK team management will once again back Shane Watson to step up on this big occasion. Thus, he will open the batting along with the in-form Faf du Plessis. The other batsman who gained his usual touch in the previous game was Suresh Raina. The experienced campaigner will take up the crucial number three position with Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni to follow.

The biggest selection headache will be the finding of a suitable replacement for Kedar Jadhav, who will not be able to take part in the remainder season due to shoulder injury. Dhruv Shorey is likely to get a chance in Jadhav’s absence, however Dhoni could also come up with a surprise selection. In the bowling department, Harbhajan, Tahir and Jadeja will be the spinners, while Bravo and Chahar will handle the pace bowling duties.

Probable XI: Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Dhruv Shorey, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Deepak Chahar, Imran Tahir.
