IPL 2019, Final- MI Vs CSK, Preview: The Gladiator Clash For The Record Bearing Title

The stage is set, teams are finalized, date and venue decided for the ultimate battle of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 extravaganza. The Mumbai Indians (MI) will be locking horns with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Grand Finale of the tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on 12th May, Sunday. The winning team from this game will also become the most successful franchisee in the history of the IPL as both Mumbai and Chennai have won three titles each thus far. In the past three battles between these two teams earlier in this tournament, Mumbai have emerged victorious on all the three occasions by comprehensive margins.

MI’s backstory

The Rohit Sharma-led are coming into this summit clash on the back of breaching the Chennai fortress for the second time this season. They registered a clinical 6-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Qualifier 1 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday (May 7). With this victory, the two biggest concerning factors also got settled down. The two batsmen, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, who were absolutely sensational for Mumbai last year, however, they failed to continue the same form in IPL 2019. But in the last match against CSK, both of them played key roles to help their team claim a spot in the final.

Suryakumar Yadav was however, the star performer in the big clash and his 71-run fabulous knock couldn’t have come at a better time than this. Now both Suryakumar and Ishan along with the rest of the batters will be expected to dish out their best of performances in this big stake encounter.

On the other hand, the bowlers have been very much consistent in this tournament. The likes of Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah and young Rahul Chahar have done amazingly well thus far and they would be aiming to come good in this crucial game as well.

CSK’s backstory

The MS Dhoni-led team is arriving into this summit clash after recording a convincing 6-wicket win over the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Qualifier 2 in Visakhapatnam. This victory also marked the form arrivals of the two CSK openers, Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis. However, Watson’s coming back in form before the final will be the biggest positive for the CSK team management as everyone is quite aware of his damage in the 2018 IPL final. Ambati Rayudu also came out unbeaten in the previous outing and this would give him a lot confidence going into the penultimate clash.

The only concerning area left for Chennai is the poor form of Suresh Raina but his track record in the knockout encounters as well as against Mumbai have been great, thus he will be expected to strike form.

But their bowling has been very much upto the mark in this season thus far as both the fast bowlers as well as the spinners have bowled really well to contain the oppositions.

Head to Head Battle

Overall (29)

In the IPL Finals (3)

Mumbai Indians’ likely Playing XI

After recording a clinical victory in the last outing, the table-toppers have no major reasons to change the winning combination. Thus, the duo comprising of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock will once again take their guards as the openers. The in-form Suryakumar Yadav will come in at three and Ishan Kishan at the fourth spot. The trio of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard will continue to don the floater’s role.

With the fabulous form he has shown in this season thus far, Hardik will be the man to watch out for in this nerve-wracking encounter. The one possible change which can be seen is that Jayant Yadav could make way for Mitchell McClenaghan. He will assist the pace bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga. The duo of Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar will be part of the spin bowling department.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan/Jayant Yadav, Rahul Chahar, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah.

Chennai Super Kings’ likely Playing XI

Just like the opposition, CSK will also most probably go into the final with the same winning combination from the previous game. This means that the in-form pair of Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson will be opening the batting once again. The experienced campaigner, Suresh Raina, will take up the crucial number three position with Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni to follow. It will be interesting to see whether the CSK team management opts to bring in Murali Vijay in order to strengthen the batting.

If Vijay finds a place in this clash then there will be an omission from the fast bowling department as Shardul Thakur is likely to face the axe. In that case, the duo comprising of Dwayne Bravo and Deepak Chahar will have the big responsibility to handle the fast bowling duties. While the spin trio of Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja will be playing key roles in this huge match as well.

Probable XI: Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur/Murali Vijay, Imran Tahir.
