Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has a perfect explanation for the reason of his team’s one-run loss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 finale against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday. The momentum swung ends after every ball and until the very last over, the trophy also seemed to be shifting tables.
However, eventually, it were the Mumbai Indians, who held their nerves amazingly well to snatch a one run victory from the jaws of defeat in the last ball thriller. With this victory, the Rohit Sharma-led team are the champions of the IPL for the record fourth time.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first that too in a big final, Mumbai got off to a flying start in the powerplay overs, but the CSK bowlers pulled things back brilliantly well. However, eventually MI did manage to reach a fighting first innings total of 149 runs in their quota of 20 overs. While in the second innings, Shane Watson for the second consecutive time in an IPL final produced a phenomenal innings of 80 runs to take the game as deep as possible. But in the end, the CSK opener failed to take his team over the finishing line.
After the match, CSK skipper MS Dhoni admitted to the fact that both the teams committed a lot of errors throughout the 40 overs. However, he also noted that the side which made one less mistake eventually went on to lift the title.
“Both teams made a lot of mistakes, the team that made one lesser mistake won,” said MS Dhoni during the post-match presentation ceremony.
We had a good season
The defending champions experienced an excellent run in the tournament, ending at the second spot on the points table in the league stages. The MS Dhoni-captained team trounced the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a high-voltage Qualifier 2 clash to qualify in the finals of the IPL for the record eighth time. And then they battled out in the nerve-wracking final until the last ball.
“As a team we had a good season. But we need to go back and reflect on how we reached the finals. It’s not one of those years where we played really great cricket to reach here. The middle order wasn’t great, and today it was very funny as to how both these teams were only passing on the trophy from one team to the other,” Dhoni added.
Dhoni heaped praises on his bowlers for their fine performances throughout the season as well as in the final yesterday. “I think the bowlers did really well for us, even today it was definitely more than a 150 wicket. They kept performing and kept getting wickets whenever needed. Whenever they restricted the opposition to a low score, somebody stepped up with the bat, chipped in and that’s how we’ve won most of our games,” the CSK skipper furthered.
He also came hard at the batters and revealed that they surely need to step up in the next season. “We have to go to our drawing board, and there is no real time for that now. We need to go into the ICC World Cup 2019 and after that we need to see the gaps that we can fill. Nothing against the bowlers, it’s the batsmen who need to step up,” Dhoni concluded.
