Reports: AB De Villiers’ Coming Out Of Retirement Was Halted By CSA

South Africa has lost all their three matches so far in the ongoing World Cup in England and Wales. After going down to England and Bangladesh, the Proteas put up an admirable fight against India only to come second at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday. Things look extremely tough for them to make it to semi-final even as the injuries are not helping either. They are missing their key player AB de Villiers in the middle-order which has led to a weak batting performance.

However, a shocking news is coming forward now that De Villiers, who retired from international cricket last year in May, had offered to play the World Cup only 24 hours ahead of the squad announcement to the Cricket South Africa (CSA). It is being understood that the superstar cricketer approached the skipper Faf du Plessis, head coach Ottis Gibson convener of selectors Linda Zondi and expressed his wish to play in the mega event.

But his offer was not only rejected but it wasn’t even considered according to the reports. The people privy to the talks have revealed that there are two main reasons behind rebuffing AB de Villiers’ offer. He didn’t fulfil the selection criteria to be eligible for playing the World Cup which is playing in the domestic cricket and international cricket in the lead up to the quadrennial event.

Rather after hanging his boots from the highest level, AB de Villiers opted to play in the different T20 leagues and performed well too.

It is unfair on the other players

The report also adds that recalling AB de Villiers, the 35-year-old, would’ve been unfair on the other players who had performed well in his absence. The likes of Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen had done well in the lead up to the squad announcement and one of them would’ve had to make way for De Villiers in the squad.

But as it stands now, South Africa seem to be in the need of their superstar more than ever and the fans are also demanding for his comeback. But with CSA ditching his offer, that seems unlikely now.
