After having lost all their six matches of the 2019 World Cup, Afghanistan is more or less out of the tournament. In their last three games, the Gulbadin Naib-captain team have nothing, but pride to play for. However, the last game against India at the Rose Bowl in Southampton turned out to be a nail-biting affair. The Afghans lost the game by just 11 runs and garnered a lot of praises from the world.
At the same venue, they are next scheduled to play Bangladesh on June 24. Placed sixth on the table, Mashrafe Mortaza’s men can’t afford to be complacent. Even as their batting has been exceptional, it’s their bowlers, who have let the team down in a few games. Bangladesh have already thumped South Africa and the Windies in a rather emphatic manner.
Gulbadin’s cheeky message
Ahead of their face-off in Southampton, Gulbadin Naib, the Afghan captain, had some cheeky words for the Tigers. “Hum to dube hai sanam, tumko lekar dubenge (We are already drowning darling, but we’ll take you with us),” Gulbadin Naib was quoted as saying in the pre-match press conference.
The 28-year-old has been impressive in the tournament. After a few poor shows, he promoted himself up the batting order and the decision didn’t backfire. He has also been amongst the wickets and he needs to pull off a decent performance even as a skipper if the Afghans are to roll over Mashrafe’s men.
Bangladesh and Afghanistan have faced each other in One-Day International cricket on seven occasions, out of which the Tigers have had the upper hand, winning four times. In World Cup cricket, Afghanistan and Bangladesh have met once before in 2015, wherein the latter side won the game by a convincing manner.
