Shakib’s All-Round Show Puts Afghanistan On The Mat

Bangladesh have kept their ICC World Cup 2019 campaign pretty much alive and kicking, recording a convincing 62-run victory over Afghanistan at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. Bangladesh reached a fighting first innings total on the back of Mushfiqur Rahim’s excellent half-century knock and Shakib Al Hasan’s impressive innings at the start. In the second innings, Shakib once again delivered and this time with the ball, claiming a sensational five-wicket haul to restrict the opposition and in turn help Bangladesh pick up a splendid victory.

Rahim's fabulous 83-run knock propel Bangladesh to 262

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a disappointing start as their opener Liton Das got dismissed in just the fifth over with 23 runs on the board. The duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal then combined together to resurrect the Bangladesh innings with an impressive stand of 59 runs for the second wicket. Tamim once again failed to convert his start into a big score, while Shakib got out after notching up yet another half-century.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah then joined hands to take Bangladesh's progress further with a fine partnership of 56 runs before the latter got out in the 43rd over. However, Mushfiqur kept playing nicely at the other, compiling an excellent innings of 83 runs off 87 balls to push Bangladesh towards a fighting total of 262 runs. Mosaddek Hossain also piled up a crucial cameo of 35 runs off 24 balls. For Afghanistan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman bowled really well to pick up three vital scalps, while Gulbadin Naib claimed two wickets.

Shakib’s brilliant five-wicket haul restricts Afghanistan

Chasing a stiff target of 263 runs, the two Afghanistan openers, Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah got their team off to a decent start by not giving any wickets in the first 10 overs. The duo added an important partnership of 49 runs before Rahmat was removed by Shakib Al Hasan in the 11th over. Hashmatullah Shahidi came out to bat at number three and failed to contribute with a significant score, getting stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim off Mosaddek Hossain’s bowling.

The Afghanistan captain, Naib, who was looking well set, fell three runs short of his half-century, getting dismissed by Shakib in the 29th over. The left-arm spinner then also removed the dangerous Mohammad Nabi for a duck and Asghar Afghan pretty quickly as well to leave Afghanistan reeling at 117 for 5.

Wicket-keeper batsman Ikram Ali Khil also failed to put up an impressive show getting out in the 36th over and until then the required run-rate had also increased significantly. The duo of Najibullah Zadran and Samiullah Shinwari did stitch a half-century partnership for the seventh wicket but till then the matters had reached beyond the limit. Shakib removed Najibullah in the 43rd over to pick up a sensational five-wicket haul. Whilst Mustafizur Rahman bowled a fine spell towards the end to bowl out Afghanistan for 200 runs in 47 overs. Shinwari remained unbeaten till the end after scoring an impressive 49-run knock, while Mustafizur finished with two wickets.
