Rohit And Rahul Twin Centuries Outrun Mathews Ton In India’s Easy Win

Team India have finished the league stages of the ICC World Cup 2019 with a comprehensive 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka at the Old Trafford, Manchester. The Sri Lankan innings with the bat got divided into two halves wherein first the Indian bowlers got a great opening with some crucial wickets at the top. But then in the next half, Angelo Mathews compiled a fighting hundred to help his team finish with a competitive total on the board. However, in the second innings, the Indian opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul composed a mammoth century partnership to help India pick up an easy win.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Sri Lankan team got off to a horrendous start losing two early wickets in the form of skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera with just 40 runs on the board. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a fantastic opening spell to provide his team the early breakthroughs. The duo of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja then also removed Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis to leave the Lankans reeling at 55 for 4. 

After these early jitters, the Lankan experienced pair of Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne combined together to bail their team out of trouble. They stitched a remarkable partnership of 124 runs before Thirimanne got out for a vital 68-ball 53 in the 38th over. 

However, Mathews never lost his concentration and racked up a sensational innings of 113 runs off 128 balls. He compiled an important stand of 74 runs along with Dhananjaya de Silva to help Sri Lanka finish with a competitive total of 264 runs on the board. For India, Bumrah picked up three crucial scalps, while the others finished with a wicket each.

Chasing a stiff target of 265 runs, Team India got off to a perfect start at the top with the two in-form Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul providing a solid opening foundation. Both the openers showed some great amount of composure and solid temperament to keep the Lankan bowlers at bay for a long time. They compiled a monumental partnership of 189 runs for the opening wicket.

Rohit smashed his fifth century of World Cup 2019 and became the only player to score five hundreds in a single edition of the tournament. He got out in the 31st over after playing a staggering innings of 103 runs off 94 balls that included of 14 fours and 2 sixes. On the other end, Rahul also played amazingly well to notch up his maiden World Cup ton.

Rahul also got dismissed after getting to his century and doing a fabulous job along with his opening partner. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten till the end at the score of 34 runs as India chased down the target of 265 runs in 43.3 overs with seven wickets in hand.
