I Am Still Hopeful Of Making It To The 2019 World Cup Squad: Ajinkya Rahane

“I’m sure I will do well in the IPL and get back into the ODI side,” says Ajinkya Rahane.

Indian Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has been out of the reckoning from the limited-overs squad for quite a while now. He last played for India in ODIs during the February 2018 ODI series in South Africa, after which the right-hander was dropped from the national side due to inconsistent performances in the six-match limited-overs series. Recently Indian chief selector MSK Prasad mentioned that Rahane is still in their scheme of things for a probable 2019 World Cup spot. But then the Mumbai batsman suffered a massive heartbreak when he was overlooked by the selectors for both the ODIs and T20I against Australia at home.

Currently, India is playing in the ongoing home ODI series against Australia and they are still searching out suitable options particularly for two or three spots. Earlier the chairman of selection committee of BCCI, MSK Prasad revealed that the final 15-member squad would be picked in accordance with the players’ performance in the first half of the upcoming IPL season, scheduled to start from March 23.

I am looking forward to do well in IPL 2019

During a recent interview, Rahane revealed that he is looking forward to do well in the upcoming IPL edition. Rahane will captain the Rajasthan Royals team in the coming T20 competition.  He reckoned that the IPL is the biggest platform for a player to showcase his potential and talent at a grand stage. He also mentioned that by doing well in the IPL, he could get back into the limited-overs team.

“Yes, I am really hopeful and I’m looking forward to doing well in the IPL. IPL is the biggest platform and I’m sure I will do well in the IPL and get back into the ODI side,” Ajinkya Rahane was quoted as saying in the Quint.

Every team part of the World Cup is really strong

The Eoin Morgan-led England team has displayed a remarkable performance in the limited-over format of the game in the recent few years. Last year, the No.1 ranked ODI side recorded some fabulous ODI series victories against strong teams like Australia, New Zealand and India. Due to their sensational efforts, they are also being considered as top contenders to lift the World Cup 2019 title later this year in their own backyard.

Rahane also feels that the English side has a better chance to win the upcoming World Cup as they will be playing at home. He stated that teams like New Zealand and West Indies also looks to be pretty solid contenders.

“See we all believe every team in the World Cup is really strong but I guess playing in England, England will be really strong. West Indies and New Zealand too,” he added.
