The thrills of the ICC World Cup 2019 are all set to begin from May 30 and almost all teams are in the final stages of their preparations. Although some teams are playing bilateral limited-overs series, the other teams are talking about the strengths of their sides. The Indian team will however be seen performing the stints in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League commencing from March 23 ahead of the World Cup starting from May 30. This will also be the first World Cup that will feature Virat Kohli as the captain of the Indian cricket team. He has been handling the captaincy of the team since the start of 2018 and has been mounting runs in every format since then. It is also known that the former captain MS Dhoni will be guiding the captain with his valuable inputs.
He brings in a lot of experience, a lot of knowledge about the game says Ponting
Ricky Ponting is one Aussie skipper that has lead his team to win the titles back to back in 2003 and 2007 and was also a member of the 1999 World Cup winning team. He said that as a former skipper, Dhoni brings in a lot of experience and his presence is highly beneficial for the Indian team.
“It is a huge plus for Virat to have someone like MS Dhoni around for the World Cup. He brings in a lot of experience, a lot of knowledge about the game. He has been there before, been through the World Cups and was the captain of the World Cup-winning team,” said Ponting.
He furthered by saying that Dhoni has match-winning abilities that cannot be ignored. He has a high control with his bat while handling the middle-order of the team. He also said that Dhoni’s absence in the last two ODIs against Australia was the key reason; the team managed a comeback to win the series by 3-2.
There is no doubt about the quality of the Indian team says Ponting
Ponting said that there is no doubt on the quality of the Indian team as they have displayed their skills time and again. The Indian team has some good and match-winning players with them, like Rohit Sharma who can manage three or four double hundreds in one-day cricket.
“There is no doubt about the quality of the Indian team. We have seen it on display for a number of years now. I think they have got so many, really good, match-winning players starting with someone like Rohit Sharma at the top who has made three or four double hundreds in one-day cricket. They’ve got so much talent available and will do really well in the English conditions as well. They will be one of the favourite teams going in,” said Ponting.
