The visiting Australian team registered an amazing 20-run victory against Pakistan in the fifth and final ODI and with that the visitors have also whitewashed the five-match ODI series by 5-0. After winning his second straight ODI series, Aussie skipper Aaron Finch has now set his eyes on the upcoming 2019 World Cup. However, Finch has also accepted the fact that the upcoming weeks will be quite crucial in finalizing the best possible combination for the mega event.
They are going to be some tough conversations
After the series victory, Finch addressed the media reporters in the post-match press conference and revealed that there are going to be some tough discussions in the coming weeks in regards to the World Cup selection. The major issue in the selection process will surely be about the batters. In the last two ODI series, the likes of Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell and Finch himself have batted exceptionally well to make their respective cases stronger. The tainted duo of Steve Smith and David Warner would also be key considerations in that selection process.
"There are going to be some tough conversations over the next couple of weeks. There are going to be some very unlucky guys. Everyone who has had an opportunity in the last of couple of months has put his best foot forward and played good cricket,” said Aaron Finch.
“There's an idea about the make-up of the 15-man squad. But, honestly, we have 20-21 guys from whom we can make the squad and it wouldn't be weaker with any of them in it. It is a good position to be in, but it is going to be a tough selection," he added.
Guys have raised their hands
Finch mentioned that the most pleasing thing about the current unit is that in every difficult situation, a new player emerges out to be the shining prospect. He also praised the group for displaying a remarkable consistency since the India series.
"The most pleasing thing has been that whenever the game has been in balance, one of our guys has raised his hand and taken on himself to get us over the line. We have been displaying consistency since India. Even the matches that we lost, we played some good cricket in it and lost some crucial moments, especially in the second match,” concluded Finch.
