Hardik Pandya’s Blistering All-Round Effort Derails CSK

The Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians recorded a brilliant performance to thump the visiting Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team by a convincing 37-run margin. However, if somebody had told that result after watching the hosts’ batting show till the 16th over, none would have believed. After losing the toss, Mumbai batters struggled to score at a rapid rate in the first 15 overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya did compose a half-century stand with the former scoring a half-century, but the hosts were moving at a very low rate. But then the pair of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard totally turned the game on its head with some power-packed hitting. They scored at a staggering pace to guide the home team to an explosive finish.

In the run-chase, the Mumbai Indians debutant, Jason Behrendorff delivered a sensational spell to leave the hosts in a troublesome position that too at the start. Kedar Jadhav tried to stamp his authority over the MI bowling-line up, but he too failed to help his team cross the barrier. Hardik was the star performer in the game, displaying a terrific performance both with the bat and ball.

Hardik and Pollard’s belligerent hitting powers Mumbai to a strong finish

CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and he went with the tradition followed at the Wankhede track and opted to field first. CSK new ball bowler Deepak Chahar started off the proceedings with an amazing opening spell, removing the in-form MI wicket-keeper batsman, Quinton de Kock in just the third over of the innings. After picking up the early wicket, the CSK bowlers never really backed down and kept the opposition batsmen under the barrel in the middle-overs by not easily allowing them to rotate the strike. MI skipper Rohit Sharma too failed to leave a mark, perishing for a struggling 18-ball 13. The duo of Krunal Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav did compile an important half-century stand, but the runs were coming at a very low rate.

After 16 overs Mumbai was still languishing at 103 for 3 and at that moment it looked like the hosts will fail to reach a competitive total. But then came a massive turning point, when Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard started unleashing their explosive powers. The duo ripped apart a pretty quality CSK death bowling attack, blasting Shardul and Bravo for a total of 45 runs combined in the last two overs. Hardik and Pollard’s smashing cameos propelled MI to an imposing total of 170 runs.

MI bowlers combined effort forces the opposition to stumble

In the second innings, CSK got off to a horrible start, losing both the openers, Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu within the first eight deliveries. Mumbai’s latest recruit Jason Behrendorff bowled a sizzling spell on debut to reduce the visitors in a miserable state at 33 for 3. Suresh Raina who had a terrific track record against MI in IPL, too fell prey to Pollard’s mind-boggling effort in the field. After that early collapse, CSK skipper MS Dhoni joined hands with Kedar Jadhav to lead the visiting team to some sort of respite with a half-century stand. Despite that partnership, CSK’s innings was going nowhere in the run-chase as the required run-rate was slowly reaching towards the impossible mark.

After a dazzling performance with the bat, Hardik continued to steal the show this time with the ball, picking the prized scalp of MS Dhoni and then Jadeja to leave the visitors reeling at 89-5. After Dhoni’s wicket, CSK were left with a mountain to climb as the asking rate touch the 16-an-over mark. Jadhav tried to delay the inevitable with a fine half-century innings but eventually he failed to take his team over the finishing line. For Mumbai, the duo of Hardik and Malinga bowled fabulously well to claim three wickets each, while Behrendorff also ended with two wickets to his name.
