Mumbai Indians (MI) latest recruit, fast bowler Jason Behrendorff delivered a fabulous opening spell on IPL debut, picking two crucial top-order wickets aiding in his side’s special 37-run win against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday. The Australian paceman claimed the prized scalps of CSK opener Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina to break the backbone of the opposition in the run-chase. He returned with excellent figures of 2 for 22 in his first IPL game.
Any performance here can really help me
Behrendorff was recently playing for Australia in the five-match ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE. He has delivered some sensational performances in the recent limited-overs series against India and thus, he is very much part of the scheme of things for the upcoming 2019 World Cup. During the post-match media conference, Behrendorff revealed that he feels that the IPL performance will really help in preparations for the mega event.
“Any performance here can really help me. My main strength is swinging the new ball upfront and taking some wickets, so it was good to be able to do that and keep in the selectors’ mind that I am bowing well. So, hopefully that will keep me in the frame,” quoted Jason Behrendorff.
It can happen
Behrendorff will be facing a stiff competition in Mitchell Starc for the left-arm seamer’s slot in the Australian World Cup squad. However, he feels that both he and Starc can surely be together part of that squad. Behrendorff noted that Starc has the ability to bowl exceptionally at any stage of the game and thus, they can play different roles in the World Cup team.
“It can happen. It is not foreign to have two left handers in the team. Australia have not done it a lot in the past but I don’t see why we can’t do that. Mitch bowls exceptionally well at the death, can also bowl at the middle and upfront. So, it might be a case if both of us are picked in the same team we can different roles,” he added.
Behrendorff also talked about his experience playing for the first time in front of the Wankhede crowd. He stated that it feels good to contribute in his team’s winning effort. “It is a great experience, really exciting. It was a good fun, good crowd out there as well. So great experience and to contribute to the win was awesome. I was not able to come last year. I was really excited to come. There is such a buzz about the IPL every time you watch it, every time you hear about it,” the Aussie fast bowler concluded.
