IPL 2019, Match 24- MI Vs KXIP, Preview: Ecstatic Mumbai Chase Fourth Win Of The Season Against Confident Punjab

After an intriguing and fascinating opening round of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) carnival wherein most of the teams have played each other at least once, the focus now shifts towards then next level. In the 24th game and their second meeting of the season, it is time for Mumbai Indians (MI) to play hosts to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 10. In the first game between these two teams earlier in the tournament, KXIP registered a brilliant 8-wicket win over the visiting Mumbai team at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

MI’s backstory

The Rohit Sharma-led team is coming into this game after recording a sensational victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the previous outing. However, in spite of the victory, the hosts do have some major chinks in their batting which needs to be sorted out pretty quickly before the start of their sixth game of the season. MI skipper Rohit Sharma is yet to fire with a standout performance at his likeable opening slot. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Yuvraj Singh and Quinton de Kock have failed to achieve some sort of consistency. Kieron Pollard’s explosive finish was the only positive from the batting aspect in the previous match.

While in the bowling department, it looks like Lasith Malinga’s departure worked as a blessing disguise for young Alzarri Joseph. The right-arm paceman impressed with a scintillating six-wicket haul on debut to help his team defend a thin total of 136 runs. The other bowlers also lent some exceptional support and they will be expected to keep up the good work in this game in this game as well.

KXIP’s backstory

On the other hand, the visiting Punjab team will also be entering this match after handing a clinical defeat to the Bhuvneshwar Kumar-led Sunrisers team. With that amazing victory, the Ravichandran Ashwin-led team also sorted out most of their major batting woes. For the second time this season, KXIP opener KL Rahul announced his form arrival in the last game, compiling stunning match-winning innings. Mayank Agarwal also continued to excel in what is turning out to be a great season for him thus far.

However, Chris Gayle’s inconsistent form will be a slight concern for the KXIP team management. The bowlers also did a fabulous job in the previous match wherein both the pacers as well as the spinners gave their best to contain the opposition. They will now be hoping to continue with the great work in the rest of the games as well.

Mumbai Indians’ likely Playing XI

The opening duo comprising of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock are yet to fire in explosive tandem this season and thus, they would be eyeing to put forward an improved effort in this match. Barring one half-century knock, Suryakumar Yadav has also not helped his miseries and he is likely to make way for Yuvraj Singh. Ishan Kishan failed to contribute significantly in his first game of the season, but he will be given another chance to prove his worth and this time at the No.3 position. The trio of Hardik, Krunal and Pollard will take up the finishers’ role.

Krunal Pandya will also partner with Rahul Chahar in the spin bowling department. While the likes of Alzarri Joseph, Jasprit Bumrah, Jason Behrendorff and Hardik Pandya will handle the fast bowling duties.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Ishan Kishan, Yuvraj Singh, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Alzarri Joseph, Jason Behrendorff, Jasprit Bumrah.

Kings XI Punjab’s likely Playing XI

There is absolutely no solid reason for the Ravichandran Ashwin-led team to tinker with the winning combination. This means that the pair of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul will once again take the guard as the openers. The in-form Mayank Agarwal will head the middle-order which will include the likes of Sarfaraz Khan, David Miller and Mandeep Singh. The middle-order batting positions are likely to be decided in accordance with the situation of the game.

All-rounder Sam Curran will partner with Mohammed Shami and Ankit Rajpoot in the pace bowling contingent. The duo comprising of skipper Ravichandran Ashwin and Mujeeb Ur Rahman will handle the spin bowling duties.

Probable XI: KL Rahul (wk), Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, David Miller, Mandeep Singh, Sam Curran, Ravichandran Ashwin (c), Mohammed Shami, Ankit Rajpoot, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
