IPL 2019, Match 29- KKR Vs CSK, Preview: Restless Knight Riders Tries To Settle The Scores Against Table-Toppers

In the first game of the entertaining IPL Sunday (April 14), Kolkata Knight Riders will be hosting the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the recent encounter between the two teams, CSK marched out victorious by a convincing 7-wicket win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The hosts led by Dinesh Karthik have witnessed an Andre Russell-dominant run thus far in the season, registering four victories in seven games. While the MS Dhoni-led Super Kings team have been on a rampant run in the tournament, winning six out of the seven matches and are thus placed comfortably at the top position on the points table.

KKR’s backstory

The Dinesh Karthik-led Knight Riders are coming into this game at the back of conceding two straight disappointing losses against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai. Both the hammerings are resultant of a poor batting show by the KKR top-order and middle-order. Except the belligerent named Andre Russell or Shubman Gill in the previous game, the likes of Nitish Rana, Robin Uthappa, Chris Lynn and Dinesh Karthik have played one or two brilliant knocks, but they have failed to strike some sort of consistency thus far in the season.

The bowlers’ consistent unimpressive performances have piled on to the misery. The spin trio of Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav haven’t yet delivery any major impactful performance so far in the competition. The same has been the story of the pacers as they have failed to scalp wickets on regular basis. The KKR team management needs to address these issues pretty quickly in order to go on a roll one again in the season.

CSK’s backstory

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings have experienced a fabulous journey in the T20 competition, coming off from three straight victories in the previous outings. However, there are still some definite chinks in their batting which the team management will be wanting to settle out before entering their seventh game of the tournament. The experienced likes of Shane Watson and Suresh Raina are yet to announce their form arrivals in IPL 2019. The biggest positive for CSK as well as Indian Cricket from the last game will be Ambati Rayudu finally coming back to his usual flamboyant touch.

Their bowling has been very much upto the mark in this season thus far as both the fast bowlers as well as the spinners have bowled really well. They would now be hoping to continue their good work in the upcoming games as well.

Head to Head Battle

At the Eden Gardens (8)

Kolkata Knight Riders’ likely Playing XI

The Dinesh Karthik-led team was forced to make a lot of definite changes in the last game due to injury issues and they are likely to retain those omissions in this game as well. The in-form Shubman Gill will open the batting along with Joe Denly, who is yet to get off the mark in IPL. Robin Uthappa will head the middle-order which will also include the likes of Nitish Rana and skipper Dinesh Karthik. The herculean named Andre Russell will once again take up the floater’s role, which he has been doing amazing well this year.

They also have someone like Carlos Brathwaite who can smack some lusty blows down the order as well contribute with three or four useful overs. Brathwaite will partner with Lockie Ferguson and Prasidh Krishna in the pace bowling department, while Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla will be the two specialist spinners.

Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Joe Denly, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Piyush Chawla, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Prasidh Krishna.

Chennai Super Kings’ likely Playing XI

The one major and perhaps the only change that the visitors will have to make is to drop the out-of-form Shane Watson and bring in Sam Billings, who played a blistering match-winning knock against the same Kolkata team last year. In Watson absence, Ambati Rayudu will move up the order and will give company to Faf du Plessis over the top. Even after an inconsistent run, Suresh Raina is likely to retain his place only due to his immense experience. Raina will partner with the likes of skipper MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav and Sam Billings in the middle-order.

Ravindra Jadeja, Imran Tahir and Mitchell Santner will take care of the spin bowling duties. While the duo comprising of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur will form part of the pace bowling attack.

Probable XI: Ambati Rayudu, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Kedar Jadhav, Sam Billings, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Imran Tahir.
