After losing three straight games in the span of two years, Mumbai Indians (MI) finally managed to stop the Delhi Capitals (DC) juggernaut, registering a sensational 40-run victory at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi. It was the brother duo comprising of Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya who stole the show with some terrific batting in the first innings and in turn the pair propelled the visiting team to an imposing total. While in the second innings, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar bowled a brilliant spell to reduce the home team in a miserable state. Then the rest of the MI bowlers also delivered excellent performances to help their team pick up a splendid win. With this staggering victory, the Rohit Sharma-led team has strengthened its playoffs chances with a tally of 12 points in their baggage.
Pandya brothers toil with the Delhi bowlers
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the two MI openers, skipper Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock started off things in a blazing manner. The openers provided the team with a solid foundation at the top, smashing 57 runs in the first six overs of the powerplay that too on a pretty slowish Delhi wicket. On the other hand, after a poor start, the home team spin bowling duo comprising of Amit Mishra and Axar Patel came back strongly to pick up three quick wickets and in turn reduced the scoring rate as well. The Delhi bowlers bowled really well in the middle-overs stage to keep the opposition batsmen quiet.
But then the Pandya brothers combined power with smartness came to the rescue of Mumbai Indians. Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya batted very much sensibly, taking calculative risks with Hardik doing his usual power-hitting job and Krunal playing some street smart cricket. The pair compiled a blistering partnership of 54 runs at a quick pace and in that process smacked the Delhi bowlers in all parts of the ground. Hardik played an entertaining cameo knock of 32 runs off just 15 balls which consisted of 3 sixes and 2 fours, while Krunal remained unbeaten till the end, composing a significant innings of 37 runs and the duo in turn powered MI to an imposing total of 168 runs.
Chahar’s phenomenal spell leaves the home team in a troublesome position
Just like Mumbai, the two DC openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw also started the matters in an aggressive manner, striking 38 runs in the first four overs. However, the DC opening duo failed to continue the progress as the MI spin duo comprising of Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya teamed up to pick four quick wickets and in turn left the home team in a real mess at 63 for 4.
Chahar sensational three-wicket spell had already done the major damage as the required run-rate had already reached the impossible lines. Jasprit Bumrah then bowled very well in the middle-overs stage to pile on DC’s misery, picking two crucial wickets and in turn helped his team keep the complete control of the game. Eventually, the MI bowlers displayed sensational combined efforts to restrict the hosts to 128 for 9 in their 20 overs and in turn helped their team pick up a comfortable 40-run win.
