IPL 2019, Match 35- KKR Vs RCB, Preview: Struggling Knights Seek Revival In Fortunes Against Deserted Bangalore

In the 35th game of the intriguing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 extravaganza, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be locking horns with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 19. Both the teams will be pretty much low on confidence as they are coming into this game after conceding convincing losses in their respective previous outings. In the first meeting between the two teams earlier in the tournament, the Dinesh Karthik-led team eclipsed the 2016 finalists by 5 wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

KKR’s backstory

The Knight Riders are coming into this game after conceding a comprehensive 5-wicket loss at the hands of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the previous match. This was the third consecutive and fourth overall loss this season for the Kolkata-based franchise. The biggest reason for the recent poor results has been their batting. Chris Lynn who started the season in a disappointing manner came back in form in the last game with a fabulous 82-run knock, but the rest of the batters have witnessed a negative movement in their respective graphs.

While in the bowling department, Kuldeep Yadav’s inability to pick up wickets has been the biggest disappointment for the two-time champions. Even the likes of Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Prasidh Krishna have not been at their best this season which has in turn piled on to the KKR team management’s miseries. They need to address these issues pretty quickly in order to revive their IPL 2019 fortunes.

RCB’s backstory

The Virat Kohli-led team will be entering into this match after conceding a clinical 5-wicket loss against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the previous outing. With this drubbing, the Royal Challengers have now lost seven out of the eight games played this season. They are virtually knocked out of the tournament with some mathematical calculations remaining as they have left themselves with an uphill task of winning all their remaining six games and then waiting for the other results to come in their favour as well. While the RCB team management are yet to find definite solutions to settle the middle-order batting woes.

The bowling concerns have only added to RCB’s miserable state this year. Barring Yuzvendra Chahal, the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini and Umesh Yadav have done well in patches, but have not been able to deliver during the death overs stage. They would be hoping to put forward an improved effort in the upcoming matches, which will be the battle for pride.

Head to Head Battle

At the Eden Gardens (9)

Kolkata Knight Riders’ likely Playing XI

Even after the loss, the Knight Riders are likely to field the same team which played the last game against CSK. This means they will once again persist with Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine as the opening combination. The middle-order department will be occupied by the likes of Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik. Their batting positions will be decided in accordance with the situation of the game.

The belligerent named Andre Russell will also be hungry as he failed to take the toll in the last game. Russell and Shubman Gill will be the two floaters in the side. In the bowling department, Prasidh Krishna and Harry Gurney will be the two pacers, while Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla will be the spinners.

Probable XI: Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Andre Russell, Shubman Gill, Piyush Chawla, Harry Gurney, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s likely Playing XI

The duo comprising of skipper Virat Kohli and keeper batsman Parthiv Patel will be opening the innings. The in-form AB de Villiers will head the middle-order which will include the likes of Moeen Ali, Marcus Stoinis and Akshdeep Nath. The biggest discussion will arise while deciding the omission to accommodate the now available South African speedster, Dale Steyn. He was roped by the franchise as replacement for injured Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Steyn will walk straight into the playing XI and is likely to come in place of Mohammed Siraj, who was leaked too many runs this season. Steyn along with Umesh and Saini will form part of the fast bowling attack, while the duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Pawan Negi will take care of the spin bowling duties.

Probable XI: Virat Kohli (c), Parthiv Patel (wk), AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali, Marcus Stoinis, Akshdeep Nath, Pawan Negi, Umesh Yadav, Dale Steyn, Navdeep Saini, Yuzvendra Chahal.
