Mike Hussey Reckons World Cup Is A Distraction For IPL Players

The two big topics of discussion doing the rounds in the cricketing arenas is the ongoing 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and about the upcoming 2019 World Cup. The ten participating World Cup teams are very much concerned about their players’ workload management ahead of the big tournament. Every team is very careful with many of their players plying trade with their respective franchises in the hectic IPL season and no team would be ready to lose an important member to injury ahead of the mega event.

However, the biggest injury concern which has risen during the IPL and it will worry the Indian cricket fans the most. Defending Champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has been struggling with a back issue for quite a while. The 37-year-old wicket keeper batsman recently missed the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) due to the same back issue. After returning back into the side, Dhoni himself conceded  that with the World Cup coming closer, he needs to be more careful about his back condition.

It has been a challenge

Chennai Super Kings are scheduled to lock horns with the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai later in the day. Ahead of the game, CSK batting coach Mike Hussey addressed the media reporters during the pre-match press conference and mentioned that it has been a great challenge to ensure that the players playing in the IPL are in the right frame of mind as well as body. He admitted the fact that many of the World Cup bound players have the mega event thoughts running in their mind constantly. However, Hussey also mentioned that those players were told to concentrate and stay in the present.

“I think it has been a challenge [to ensure the players are in the right frame of mind and body] throughout the tournament. A number of players had the World Cup in their mind. But we told them to concentrate as much as they can here and in due course of time, the World Cup will come around,” Sportstar quoted the former Australian player on the eve of the CSK’s home game against Mumbai Indians.

Hussey further mentioned that the players need to charge up themselves in the IPL. He reckoned that tournaments such as the IPL can prove to be distraction at times, but it is also important to deal with them. Hussey stated that Dhoni doesn’t want to miss any more games for CSK due to the back problem. “It can be a distraction at times, but we have to deal with it,” Hussey added.
