IPL 2019, Match 52- KXIP Vs KKR, Preview: Who Will Crawl Ahead In The Playoffs Race?

After an enthralling encounter in Mumbai, it is now time to shift the focus on another mouth-watering clash. In the 52nd game of the captivating Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 extravaganza, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) will play hosts to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KXIP) at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on May 3. This will be the last home game of the season for KXIP team and thus, they would want to end things on a winning note. Both the teams will be coming into this match after witnessing contrasting results in their respective previous outings. In the first meeting between these two teams earlier in the competition, KKR emerged victorious with a brilliant 28-run win.

KXIP’s backstory

The Ravichandran Ashwin will be entering this match on the back of conceding a comprehensive 45-run defeat at the hands of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the previous outing. With this drubbing, the KXIP team have left themselves in an extreme tough situation where they need to win both their remaining two games as well as want the other results to come in their favour. Majority of the batsmen looked in a good nick in the last match, but still each of them failed to convert their starts into big innings and this has been the story of KXIP batting this season.

Keeping Ravichandran Ashwin’s excellent performance aside, the other KXIP bowlers have struggled to hit the right lengths on a regular basis in the last few games. Murugan Ashwin and Mohammed Shami have bowled well in patches, but the latter gave away too many runs in the last match.

KKR’s backstory

The Dinesh Karthik-led team is coming into this match after recording a sensational 34-run victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last outing. However, they still need to win both their remaining two matches in order to remain in the contention for the playoffs. The KKR top-order batters struck some well-needed form in the last match as three of them did the massive run-scoring. However, the rest of the batters still need to prove themselves and their performance will be monitored closely in this game.

The KKR bowlers yet another time this season were dispatched for cleaners in the previous match by Hardik Pandya. Barring Andre Russell, rest all the other bowlers ended with pretty expensive figures and this has been the story of KKR’s bowling this season.

Head to Head Battle

Kings XI Punjab’s likely Playing XI

Even after conceding a loss in the last match, KXIP team will most likely retain the same combination in this game as well. This means that the explosive pair of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul will open the innings. Mayank Agarwal will head the middle-order which will include the likes of David Miller and Nicholas Pooran. Young wicket-keeper batsman Simran Singh did a decent job in his debut match and thus he will retain his place.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman ended with horrible figures in the last game and he will make way for either Hardus Viljoen or Sam Curran. Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami are the other two fast bowlers, while the Ashwin duo comprising of Murugan Ashwin and Ravichandran Ashwin will handle the spin bowling duties.

Probable XI: Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Simran Singh (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin (c), Sam Curran, Mohammed Shami, Murugan Ashwin, Arshdeep Singh.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ likely Playing XI

KKR have tried quite a few opening combinations this year, but they have struggled to seek consistency from any of them. Nonetheless after finding form in the last match, Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill will open the batting in this game as well. Nitish Rana, who has had a brilliant run thus far, will take up the crucial number three spot, while skipper Dinesh Karthik will once again promote himself and bat at number four position in order to provide some solidity. Robin Uthappa who made a comeback into the side in the last match will retain his place for sure, but his batting position is still now clear.

Andre Russell will come in at five and perform his usual finishing job with perfection with some support from Sunil Narine. Rinku Singh could make way for Kuldeep Yadav’s comeback. Sandeep Warrier did a beautiful job on debut and he will handle the pace bowling department along with Harry Gurney. Piyush Chawla, Sunil Narine are the two frontline spinners and Kuldeep’s inclusion will give them a boost.

Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Chris Lynn, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Andre Russell, Robin Uthappa, Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, Piyush Chawla, Sandeep Warrier, Harry Gurney.
