Over The Years Friendship With Ponting Has Grown Says Sourav Ganguly

Before the start of the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), there were a theory doing the rounds on whether the two legendary and rival skipper, Ricky Ponting (Head Coach) and Sourav Ganguly (Advisor) who will be working in association for the Delhi Capitals (DC), will be able to gel well together or not. However, the former cricketer duo has almost transformed the faith of the Delhi-based franchise to a totally different level.

Delhi Capitals, who are yet to win an IPL title, have experienced a sensational run thus far in the 12th edition of the league, winning seven of the games played so far and with an excellent tally of 16 points in their baggage, the Delhi-based franchise have already qualified for the playoffs and that too after a long period of six years.

We are great friends

During a recent interview, Delhi Capital advisor Sourav Ganguly opened up on his association with franchisee and head coach Ricky Ponting. Ganguly revealed that he and the legendary Aussie skipper are great friends. He mentioned that there were surely those times when they were adversaries on the pitch and engaged in some nervy battles as well, but noted that their friendship has grown over the years.

“Oh we are great friends. There was a point in time when we were adversaries on the pitch, but over the years our friendship has grown. He has done some great work with the boys and it's showing,” quoted Sourav Ganguly.

Ponting as India's next coach?

While speaking on whether Ponting could become the future coach of the Indian team, Ganguly stated for that to happen, the Australian legend will have to stay away from home for 8-9 months of a year. However, the former Indian captain noted that Ponting has definitely got the credentials in his favour for the major role.

“That you have to ask him if he is ready to stay away from home for 8-9 months of a year. But yes, if you talk about credentials, there is no doubt he can be a great candidate,” Ganguly inferred.

On the performance of the Delhi team, Ganguly mentioned that they got settled with the perfect combination which is a really important factor in a tournament such as the IPL. He made special mentions of Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, skipper Shreyas Iyer and speedster Kagiso Rabada, and revealed that they have all done very well this season.

“It's about everybody contributing, and the most important thing about IPL is getting the team right - something that we did. The players come, don't get much time to practice, and get straight into match situation. So it's important to be in the zone and the Delhi team -- with the likes of Shikhar, Prithvi, Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Rabada -- have done that very well,” the former Indian cricketer concluded.
