IPL 2019, Match 55- KXIP Vs CSK, Preview: With Nothing Much On The Line, CSK Aim To Finish As Table-Toppers

In the first game of the blockbuster Sunday (May 5), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) will be playing hosts for one last time this season to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. This will be the last game of the tournament for these two teams. The hosts have already been knocked out of the competition, but they have pride to play for, while the Super Kings have booked a spot in the playoffs and also sealed a top two finish which will in turn give the defending champions two opportunities to qualify in yet another IPL season finale. In the first meeting between these two teams earlier in the league, CSK completed a sensational 22-run victory over KXIP.

KXIP’s backstory

The Ravichandran Ashwin-led team will be coming into this match after suffering a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the previous outing. With this drubbing, KXIP team also depleted their hopes of booking a spot in the playoffs of VIVO IPL 2019. And now they will be aiming to play for pride and end their home season as well as IPL campaign on a positive note. The problem from the batting perspective for KXIP has been the over-reliance on the opening duo comprising of Chris Gayle, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal hasn’t been consistent on converting his starts.

Barring skipper Ravichandran Ashwin, the rest of the KXIP bowlers have also struggled to strike some sort of consistency thus far in the tournament. However, keeping the past struggles aside, the bowlers will be hoping to come good in this last match.

CSK’s backstory

The MS Dhoni-boosted team will be entering this game after recording a massive 80-run victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the previous outing. It has been clearly evident this year that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) becomes an all different side in the presence of skipper MS Dhoni. The veteran wicket-keeper batsman has missed two games in the ongoing tournament due to back issue and on both the occasions the defending champions have succumbed to comprehensive losses. And then on his return, the Chennai-based franchisee has looked as a complete different side in both the following games.

Shane Watson’s form will be a concern going into this match for the CSK team management. But their bowlers have done a wonderful job this season and it has been a collective effort. They will be expected to come good in this game as well.

Head to Head Battle

At the PCA Stadium, Mohali (5)

Kings XI Punjab’s likely Playing XI

The likes of Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, Simran Singh, Harpeet Brar and a few others who haven’t got much of opportunities this year might get a chance as the faith of the team in this competition is already decided. However, the opening duo of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul will retain their places at the top of the order and they would want to sign off on a great note. Mayank Agarwal will probably miss out, while Nicholas Pooran will retain his place. Sarfaraz Khan might come in for Mandeep Singh.

In the fast bowling department, Andrew Tye will partner with the likes of Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh with Sam Curran as the all-rounder. The Ashwin duo comprising of skipper Ravichandran Ashwin and Murugan Ashwin will handle the spin bowling duties.

Probable XI: Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal/Karun Nair, Mandeep Singh/Sarfaraz Khan, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Sam Curran, Ravichandran Ashwin (c), Andrew Tye, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Murugan Ashwin.

Chennai Super Kings’ likely Playing XI

The CSK team management would also want to approach the dead rubber with a different playing eleven. The out-of-form Shane Watson will definitely open the batting as he would want to get some runs under his sleeves before entering the playoffs. Faf du Plessis might also retain his spot at the top of the order along with Watson. The in-form Suresh Raina will take up the crucial number three spot once again with the likes of N Jagadeeshan or Ambati Rayudu, skipper MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav coming in next.

Deepak Chahar has played every game thus far and he is likely to don the bench. In his absence, Mohit Sharma will partner all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the seam bowling department. As the conditions in Mohali won’t assist spin that much, thus Harbhajan Singh could miss out for Shardul Thakur, while Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja will be the spinners.

Probable XI: Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis/Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, N Jagadeeshan/Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar/Mohit Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Imran Tahir.
