In the recent few years, it has been seen that the toss plays an important role in deciding the outcome of a Test match. It is a fact that the home team gets a lot of advantage by winning the toss in the longest format of the game. There were many theories being discussed earlier to remove the toss rule with the visiting team given the choice whether to bat or ball first.
South African Test skipper Faf du Plessis has been very unlucky when it comes to calling at the time of toss especially in Asia. After losing the toss in both the Test matches against India, Faf has now lost nine straight tosses in Asia. During the pre-match press conference before the third and final Test match against India, Faf mentioned that he could be sending in a substitute for the toss.
This will not be the first time when Faf will be sending a substitute for the toss ceremony as in 2018, he sent JP Duminy for the toss in the match against Zimbabwe. South Africa won that match by a resounding margin.
