The Big Bash League (BBL) which is one of the most popular T20 league played in Australia always comes up with some new ideas to revolutionize the cricket game. Last year, the organisers came up with the idea of tossing the bat during the toss instead of using the coin which is a tradition being followed since a long while. In the upcoming BBL 2019-20 season, if the match ends in a tie and so does the Super Over, the teams will play multiple Super Overs till the final outcome is decided.
There is another development being introduced for the first time in the BBL history that there will be strategic time out during the upcoming season. Only one time out will be available per innings which the batting side can take between overs 7 and 13. The 2019-20 BBL season will start with the opening encounter between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder at The Gabba scheduled on December 17.
"We are always looking for ways to improve the competition for our fans, players and clubs. The super over has been a discussion point globally after the ICC Cricket World Cup Final. We are pleased to have landed on a solution that provides teams and fans with a more satisfying outcome to a finals match,” said Cricket Australia's Head of Big Bash Leagues Alistair Dobson.
"The Strategic Time Out has been thought about and developed over the last couple of years, with input from key stakeholders in the game. We've seen the strategic time outs used in other T20 competitions around the world, and we feel that providing the batting team with the power to call a time out will add an extra tactical dimension to the outcome of the game, with the priority of maximising runs," he added.
