Sam Curran’s Phenomenal Hat-Trick Deflates Delhi Capitals

The Ravichandran Ashwin-led Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) recorded a brilliant performance to register its second victory in IPL 2019, handing Delhi Capitals (DC) an unbelievable 14-run defeat in Mohali. In the first innings, the Delhi bowlers delivered fabulous combined effort to restrict the home team under a modest first innings total. While in the chase, Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan got DC off to a great start and at the halfway mark it looked like Delhi will romp home with an easy win. But then KXIP left-arm fast bowler Sam Curran delivered a staggering spell to rattle the opposition batsmen and in turn propelled his team to an astonishing victory. Curran claimed a staggering hat-trick in the second innings to hurt the opposition and in turn became the first bowler to pick up a hat-trick in IPL 2019.

DC bowlers combined effort force KXIP batsmen to surrender

Delhi skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first because he felt that the wicket won’t change much throughout the game. DC’s new ball bowlers, Chris Morris and Sandeep Lamichhane started off the proceedings with fine opening spells to rattle the KXIP top-order. KXIP took a surprising decision in promoting Sam Curran as pinch-hitter, but the idea failed drastically, as he perished after a 10-ball 20. After those early jitters, the pair of Sarfaraz Khan and David Miller helped their team to recover a bit with an excellent partnership of 62 runs.

But then Lamichhane and Morris once again came to Delhi’s rescue, dismissing both Miller and Sarfaraz to leave the hosts in disarray. Miller’s wicket triggered a vital KXIP batting collapse as the home team lost its next four wickets in a matter of just three overs. However, towards the end, Mandeep Singh led the KXIP innings to some respite, smashing an unbeaten cameo of 29 runs to help his team finish with a fighting total of 166 runs. For DC, Morris was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets at an impressive economy, while Rabada and Lamichhane scalped two wickets each.

Curran’s terrific late spell halt Delhi’s progress

Delhi got off to a poor start as their in-form opener Prithvi Shaw got dismissed in the very first over of the run-chase. The duo comprising of Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer then steadied the DC innings with a fluent partnership of 61 runs. However, after getting settled on the crease both Dhawan and Iyer threw their wickets away in the form of soft dismissals. The duo of Rishabh Pant and Colin Ingram then joined hands to resurrect the DC innings in the run-chase.

At the halfway mark in the run-chase, Delhi Capitals were cruising home with an easy victory. But then the match suddenly took a u-turn as Sam Curran bowled scintillating late spell to trigger a huge DC batting collapse. From being in a strong position at 144 for 3, the visitors suddenly reduced to a miserable state, getting bowled out for a total of 152 runs. They lost their last 7 wickets for just eight runs. Towards the end, Sam Curran finished off the proceedings by picking up a phenomenal hat-trick to guide his team towards an unbelievable victory. For KXIP, Curran returned with terrific figures of 4 for 11, while Shami and Ashwin also bowled really well to pick up two wickets each.
